MPG on first tank...
23.568 :D
needless to say i'm pleased. no grandma driving either. i'm still amazed at how smooth it is, and reving to 9k is just amazing. and all the P.O.S.s with fart pipes wanting to race me keeps me in a good mood...as does simply driving the car.
i love the details to the car...especially the rotary theme carried out through the design. lets face it...i love the car, as does my dad. i let him drive it, and i think he wants to steal it. i'll need to keep my eyes on him

New car - so so mileage
Only 500 miles on mine so far but seem to be getting around 17 MPG. (Though I'm babying it until I get a full break in - then watch out)
Hopefully mpg will improve after the break in.

Glyphon,
Was that all highway driving? I can't imagine getting over 300 miles on a tank. Best I've ever done is 230 miles all highway.
oh yeah...and i avg 170 miles with all city driving.

Yeah, it must be alot if not all highway driving.
My first tank full I got 19.7 (which is the highest ever...so far that is) but I can hit 250 in all city driving without a problem. So far my lowest fuel economy 18.7mpg...
mikeb...WOW...that is a major improvement and a very scary begining???

wow.. I have an RX-8 (used 16k miles).. I'm on the third tank of fuel..
So far I've gotten 14 MPG on the first and 16 MPG on the second..
(That is mostly city driving w/ a few highway trips.. but nothing major.)

I got really good mileage on my first tank (I didn't actually calculate it though). Since then, I've been averaging 14-15 mpg
. Right now I have 1500 miles on the car and will be getting it out of storage Friday. Hopefully, the mileage will go up as the car breaks in a little more. Hard to keep my foot out of it though. Love the sound of the rotary revving to 9k.

Zoom44,
Actually, I'm always in 6th on the highway when cruising. I definitely hit 80 on occasion but i'd say i average 75. I've heard that the gas companies put tons of additives in the gas for the winter months. Apparently that lowers mileage.
Boggles the mind.

and yeah, it's used. wouldn't even dream of redlining a new engine.

Ridiculous...
23+ MPG. I would kill for that in this car.
I luv her, trust me I do. But I'm lucky to get 15-16 MPG in the city and maybe as much as 18+ on the hwy. 2250 mi and counting - negligible imporvement thus far.
My biggest fear though was 12 MPG or less like some. So far so good on not getting down there.
Man, I would luv to get 20-24 MPG. That would be so awesome!
RX8... 23 MPG... LUCKY!!! Sorry, I've seen Nap Dynomite too many times.
"$3 gas is the way of the future." - me

man i thought you were redlining on your first tank like khtm thought i was thinking the trick to good gas mileage was to reline it during breakin. I'm guessing the previous owner did a nice job of breaking it in, my friends dad just got one and i think he's gunna keep it under 4k rpms so lets see what he gets. I got 12.67 mpg this week i dunno how usually i get ~17.
OK, it's getting confuesing...I heard it was 3.75K where the extra fuel is consumed...not in the high 4K range...maybe someone will clear this up.
Heck...does anyone have evidence of this? Did Mazda say some place that at 3.75K or x.xxK more fuel is allowed in the engine????
Someone please reply...

I was wondering about mpg yesterday, too. It makes me laugh out loud (not in a good way) to see Mazda's advertisements still showing Estimated Miles per Gallon hwy of 25.
I would think how the car is equipped will have an effect. Do things like a rear spoiler, body kit, spare tire, moonroof, add much weight? Also, tire pressures may be affecting mpg as well.
For sake of comparison, mine is a 2004 sport package only, 6mt -- I left the dealership yesterday with 22miles on the odo, Vegas to Reno. Drove almost all the way home on highways, and at the first fillup I got 18.8 mpg, 2nd stop was 20.7 mpg. Avg. elevation is about 5000'.

24 -25 mpg on the highway is easy really it is. some have goten more than that- elara and polak are 2 i can think of. nemisis8 got 25 mpg i think on the same drive i got 23.99. get up to about 65-75 make sure your in 6th and leave it until your low fuel light comes on. that should net you 23-25 mpg.
wannahave my answer to navybeard was "yes i have a comment read the s-dais thread" not yes he was correct about the rpm. that thread will answer the question of when the other ports and injectors come on line. also read your manual for when mazda says to shift. ive been shifting basically where they say for 2 in town tanks recently and the last i got 18.34 mpg.

OK, I'll go check out that thread...
I think Mazda's recommendation is a little too conservative for my taste, but again...I'm not complaing...I Avg 19.2+mpg in mainly city driving (75/25 city/highway) so I'm fine with that.
