Motor mounts questions

Dealer says I have 2 motor mounts that are now showing signs of wear. He kindly offered to replace them for me for a small fee of $500. I told him no thanks. But, what's the deal with them? Any chance they are something that should be covered under any warranty at all or was there ever a TSB or recall on them? Seems like I remember reading something, somewhere, on this forum (have searched and can't find it again) about a TSB on motor mounts.

I found this DIY. This may have been where I saw the reference to a TSB before but there are definitely a couple of mentions about a TSB on this in this thread.

https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...=engine+mounts

So, even if there is a TSB, they don't fix it for free? Sorry to be so ignorant. My experience with other vehicles I've owned has been that if I take a vehicle in with a complaint about something and they find a TSB on it, they fix it for free. So, that's what I'm basing off of.

Thank you. So, my car matches the year and VIN range and the symptoms in the TSB are exactly what I'm experiencing. So, shouldn't the dealer have to fix it under some sort of warranty? They quoted me $500 to install 2 new motor mounts. Definitely not going to have them do it if I have to pay. But if they are obligated to fix it at no cost to me, then I definitely want to get it done. Or does the TSB have to fall under the standard warranty period to be honored?

I guess I'm probably preaching to the choir here but what a crock of @#$%@#$! Something like this should be a recall, period. At the very least, motor mounts should be covered under the same warranty as the motor itself.

So, what's the worse case scenario here if I don't fix this right away? A little vibration now that will get worse over time - more of a nuisance than anything else? I doubt I'd put up with it if it gets worse, especially if I can fix it myself a lot cheaper than $500.

Motor mounts are, to a degree, a wear and tear item. If you are under warranty and there's a TSB, there's a chance they might replace them free but I wouldn't hold my breath.

$500 is probably a tad high. I had mine done and the cost was $400-something.

Do you notice any serious vibration at idle or clutch slippage? I had both and even though it wasn't really enough to bother me, new mounts really made a noticeable difference.

It's not a bad vibration at all. I have an AT and I feel it at idle only when the car is in Drive but it's not bad at all at this point - certainly not $500 bad for a 16 year old's daily driver.

It sure made a big difference in engine movement when I had it done under warranty. You could really feel it when you shifted gears.

TSB is basically an optional recall that they don't have to tell people about, but is generally only free under the warranty level that covers is. In this case, motor mounts are covered under bumper to bumper, which you are out of, and thus they don't have to cover it if they don't want to. Some good dealerships still might.

MSP16 reflash for example is covered under powertrain as a TSB, but you pay for it if you are outside of powertrain

I would word this different. A TSB is a bulletin to inform the dealers and auto techs that this problem may exist and what to look for. It is a problem that has been reoccurring more often than one would expect. You could consider it as a addendum to the service manual for the car. It should not be considered a recall.

+1^ TSB doesn not mean warranty recall. Consider it like an upgrade, update to information. They changed the part and know there is a problem, but since its a normal wear part your going to replace anyways they wont do it for free.

I apologize for posting bad info. no wonder nobody listens to chicks around here.
So the way conclusion was that when I took mine in for rattling and marbles in a can, the stealership said that there wasn't a TSB one that covered mine because 'the mounts were sheared off'. That was the BS I was fed. The cost was on me as a result.

In summary, let Easy_E1 do the work....

It depends if you are under warrenty. I think we are all out of warrenty for the mounts now.

No, meant 16. This car is my daughter's daily driver - she is 16, soon to be 17.

I realize a TSB is not a recall. That was my point, something like this should be because it's a defect in material workmanship because the rubber can't stand up to normal operating conditions. But, since there is no safety issue or downstream issues that can be caused from it, they don't have to issue a recall on it. Oh well.

I'll probably order the parts if/when I find a deal on them online and change them out on a rainy day.

yes well the other side of the coin is that the majority of the population never cares. Ive known people who drove around on broken motor mounts in cars for 100,000 miles. Thats partly why they don't make a big deal out of it.
