The S2000 has been lagging sales wise and performance wise for a while now. Talk about long in the tooth. In the comparo below, the S2k even with the new motor came in last as an overall sports car.

If your referring to the RX8's rotary engine then this is simply untrue and also insulting to the thousands of owners who have had bad engines! Mazda owns up to the Renesis design problems, but they will engineer them out eventually on future designs.

I've had 2 previous rotaries that lasted ~130K-150K, and ended up out living the life of the cars. Renesis's can go out at virtually any mileage, redlining daily or not.

 

I have a completely different experience here. Not many engines failed for design problems, most of them did for bad maintenance like missed coil swaps, broken catalysts kept for thousands of km etc.
I'm not insulting anybody but the progress made with the renesis can be seen everywhere.

You think RX8's have problems , go check out all the problems Tiburons have. My daughter has a v6 Tiburon GT. Talk about a piece of crap. I could list 50 things that have broken on that thing. It all started at 20K miles and hasn't stopped yet. My 8 has had only a couple of minor things go wrong and I have 65k mi. on it.

 

I feel like my 8 is pretty damn refined when I'm on a back road eating turns alive.

love my 8 wish it had another 30-50 hp stock though to the wheels. i would like some taller gearing and some quicker accel. again love my car, love the handling but i want more power. and i just havn't seen much on the x16 to get my blood moving and my hopes up.

Refining? I don't want refinement. I want sharpening. And from the reviews, the R3 seems to be just that.

 

mazda will probably produce a new rx-7 style car, but it won't be called that I'm sure.

The designer of the furai and that line of cars has also stated that production of something like the furai is a very real possibility, so we might see a supercar to rival the new NSX and the GT-R, but this is all speculation. All I know is that if it is made, it'll be one of the most beautiful cars in production.

Mazda may not put out a bunch of revisions to it's sports cars or carry big lines of them, but at least they are nearly completely bespoke. Most sports cars are mongrels built from a parts bin, the 350Z being one of the worst. But nearly all of the RX-8 was designed from scratch, I can only think of the tranny when I try to find something that wasn't tailor made for the car.

The Genesis and the G35 and G37 may be good looking and decent handling cars, but they're just saloon cars with the equivalent of pushup bras and hair extensions.

 

So we agree... RX-8 > *.

 

Talking about bmw 3 series turbos? they seem to fail pretty easily. my neighbour broke it in 3000km and was all but happy, mentioning "all of the other cases he knew of". At least, he now is a rotary enthusiast

 

not true at all.. the flash of the ecu proves that wrong.. lack of oiling to the apex seals under light cruise was the issue..

but that was back in the k, n, and m flash days..

Well, it might be true for you but you should always consider my point of view (europe) which i often forget to mention.
We didn't have such kind of failures here, mostly carbon buildups due to traffic.
Anyway it was not an engine problem, but a tuning one since Mazda solved it with new flashes. I feel like the upgrades made with the restyle are just an extra.

btw, i think mazda recomends 5w30 in the land of prancing horses and bulls!

As for the EPA well, Euro4 spec is aggressive as well, but at least Mazda puts 5w30 oil as a factory oil.
It is curious to note, continuing the OT, that rx8 with open catalyzers\midpipes etc tend to have way less problems in city traffic. Well, i guess you can't understand what kind of traffic i'm talking about
