Midpipe Fine Question

I was wondering how much would you be fined if you were caught with a midpipe? A muffler shop told me it was 10k? Wondering if any1 was caught yet.

Thanks.

Is this something that would vary by state? If so, it would be quite helpful to know what state you live in.

I believe it is a Federal Felony which is up to a maximum $10,000 and/or 5 years prison. These are rarely enforced with individuals. More likely to be inforced with the shop.

The federal penalty is up to $25K for a manufacturer or dealer, up to $2500 for anyone else.

Most states have their own laws in parallel with the federal regulation. For the most part, states can enact laws parallel to EPA regulations, but cannot make them stricter (EPA is sometimes called the "Environmental Preeemption Agency"), so I'd suspect that state fines are similar to federal.

Does removing the cat really improve anything in a modern car?

Yeah, the cat restricts airflow to a degree. Removing it increases flow and HP.
