A Melted Bag
So, I am driving down the highway yesterday and this bag blows out from the median and goes right into my lane. Nothing I can do, so I have to run over it. I look in my rearview mirror and do not see the bag. I'm like great, the thing must be stuck in my grill. I'll look real cool now. So, about 30 minutes later, we pull in for gas and I smell this nasty burning smell. I just go I hope that's not my car and just drive on, thinking it was the gas station or something. So, I pull into a parking garage with my window down and I can hear the bag sliding along the ground. I get out of the car and see that this thick, yellow, plastic bag has somehow gotten hung underneath my car and is now melting to what appears to be my exhaust. But, I'm no mechanic. So, I'm freaking out because it looks pretty bad. I was thinking that we were lucky it didn't catch fire. But, then I realize that I have to drive home as well. I am around an hour away from home. So, I rationalize with myself that if it was going to catch on fire, it would have done it already. So, I pull off what I can because what is left I cannot reach. So, I drove my car again today, and the smell is terrible. I parked my car in the garage, and you can actually smell the path my car went down the street. I don't mind the smell if it is going to eventually burn off anyways. But, what do ya'll think I should do? Is my safety at risk here? Or, will it eventually burn away?

I feel for you. I would just pick off what I can. You know what might even work. Let the car reach temp and then spray some water onto the exhaust where the bag is. If you're lucky it might harden up and become easy to pick off. Its worth a shot. Good luck to you. If that doesnt work, I guess your just relegated to smelling burning plastic for the next week. Sorry and good luck, hopefully somebody can give you some kind of definitive answer. You cant be the first person this has happened to.

Thanks 9k, and the brake cleaner and brush seems like a good idea. Just dont be alarmed when you turn back on the car and it begins to smoke due to the cleaner.

This happened to me awhile back....took a few months for the smell to finally dissappear....I brought my 8 in to the dealer for an oil change a few days later, and I asked them to try and scrape off anything if possible...They told me they'll do what they can, but most of it will just have to burn off by itself =[
It's annoying but yeah... it was unavoidable...

its gonna be a bitch..it would be ez if the car was totally jacked up..u can get under it and scrape like mad with a paint remover... that should atleast shorten the burn out time=)

happend to me like 2 weeks ago, at first i was nervous it was my engine but someone advised me to check if it was a grocery bag, and it was, right at the same place you got it. Im gonna try just let it burn off or maybe see if the dealer can do something on my next oil change.
the smell is barely there but its still anoying
