I've come to the realization that the rx8 is not for me. More for people done with school and enjoy the mechanics of the rotary engine and such. I don't want to indulge myself into a world full of passionate people and be the only one who just want to ride for the looks of it.
I'm sorry if you all don't like the TC thaaattt much, jeez.
What other car would you suggest, I want a coupe, "tunerish"

i bought my '04 used with 38k miles a few years ago. i use it solely as a daily driver and have put on another 16k miles or so since then. i am by no means mechanically inclined but i've found myself wanting to learn and tinker around a bit and so i have. it's not a requirement to do so and no more maintenance than my wife's accord. gas mileage is what it is but i average around 17 mpg for city driving and around 21 mpg for highway and that is suitable for me.
what you really have to realize is that you're on a car forum. the people on here are going to be into their cars more than the average person and many will do some minor mods themselves but there are even a great majority on here that do no more than learn the ins and outs of the car and leave the rest to a mechanic or dealership. and the number of people on here is small compared to the population of owners of 8s so there are plenty of people who own an 8 and don't do anything other than general required maintenance.
if you go on the TC forum or any tuner forum, you'll think there is extra work required for them b/c the people on there are looking to understand their cars just as we do ours. it's your call as to what you want/like but it is a bit comical to see a comparison b/w an 8 and a TC.

I think you guys misunderstood the intention of his post. It is not for a comparison, he's inquiring from our experience which would be a better car suited for his situation not knowing much about the rotary and being in college. He like many love the looks of the 8 and is drawn to it but didn't know if it would be the better choice. As I explained to him, the 8 is a machine much different than a piston engine vehicle and requires attention to detail not being a typical jump in a go machine where you don't need to maintain it.
He already agreed the TC is better suited and is now inquiring on what other vehicle alike to it would be a good choice is all.

that's just it. at first i thought this was a comparison thread but after reading and seeing he has come to the conclusion that the TC is the right choice, I added that I don't necessarily think it is. not that the 8 is the right choice but it shouldn't be ruled out b/c it's an enthusiast's car and really only so much as this forum makes it out to be.

I agree but, he's not passionate about the 8 other than looks, he's in college and needs funds for that alone, you have dipshits on campus always willing to do something to a nice car and risk getting it messed up, needs to learn more about the car for a bit before just deciding to buy it not knowing it in and out nor what he's getting into, it's completely different animal from the typical piston engine, and a couple of other factors.
I mentioned to him the 8 is a great choice when he's ready but based on his situation and plus what he's looking for (better mpg and reliability) I think for now the TC is the better option of the 2, or another cheap piston based coupe if he still wants that style.

The OP was directed to the civic, mazda 3, corrolla etc. He has the internet at his disposal, why come on a sportscar forum and ask the obvious?
Economy = scion
rx8 = fun and gas consumption
It's the same if your a college student or fully employed.
He must want support for passing a chance at the rx8.
We have answered all his questions
He decided
It's in the past
Move on

I agree with the fact that my judgment may be skewed since I'm on a forum in which car enthusiasts roam, though there are many people out there who just maintain the car normally and are having no problems.
I hope yall realize why this is a tough decision, and MPG is only a minor issue, it won't sway my decision, but reliability will.
I may not be an enthusiast now but I wouldn't mind if I become one with a purchase of this car. This decision can either turn out really bad or really good.
I'm actually now leaning toward the rx8 since my father is anti-scion and pro-mazda.. and he'll be helping me out with the cost.

why do you not want a honda? i think in a lot of ways the civic si is perfect for you. it handles great for a fwd, has lsd, and has a buzzy high-revving engine somewhat similar to the renesis. the coupe is pretty good looking, too. in comparison, the tc feels like a corolla. the tc is a pretty nice car, and will likely be more reliable than the rx-8. the civic si combines a dose of the engine and handling characteristics of the 8 with the practical and reliable aspects of the tc

i DD'd the 8 in college too. Aside from gas consumption, there really was no problems. You can actually haul quite a bit in the 8, and 4 seats go a long way in college.
I don't understand why so many think it's such a "sports car" when it's really just about the most comfortable "sports car" out there.
My s2k is my DD now, easily much worse than the 8 through L.A. traffic and I still think it's easy.

In terms a regular maintenance for a rotary, it's not that much different than a piston engine other than having to check/add oil a little more often. I love my RX-8 as a daily driver and that was the intention of the designers in the first place...hence the 4 seats was a must in its build initiative.

Fixed and I agree.
