Mazda Rx-8 vs Saturn Ion RedLine SDrs vs SDrs!

Mazda Rx-8 vs Saturn Ion RedLine Sucide Doors vs Sucide Doors!!! Which is better and overall the Ion turbo has a 0-60 6.0 seconds and 15.6 Quarter mile time, 0.85 300ft skidpad and 67.2 mph lane change. Sounds comparable Until you notice the BRAKES!!! 70-0 164ft, wow!! And the plastic cheap interior and crazy dashboard with all the gauges are to the right or left in (Europe) of the driver, except the tachometer!!!

RX-8 wins again hands down, Looks and Feel and BRAKES!!! What your take?

I'm going to resurrect my RX-8 vs. Yugo thread from months back in honor of this one...

why would you ever compare a FWD Saturn to an RX-8?

On a side note, my roommate had a Saturn Ion Coupe with a 100 shot of Nitrous. That thing was fasssssst for a crappy GM 4-banger. The look on people’s faces when he hit the purge at a stoplight was priceless.

That's because it's not some crappy 4 banger. It's one of the toughest little 4 cyl engines out there. Look it up sometime. No matter what you think of the car, the engine is a gem.

The Ion is possibly the worst compact sedan produced by an American company in the last 10 years.

It cannot die soon enough. Long live the Astra.

After this, lets compare the 8 to a moped.

You're quite wrong, the Ion redline is essentially a Cobalt SS and they pretty good little cars for the price. Also, the Ion Redline is capable of running mid to low 14 second 1/4 miles and traps close to 100 mph... It would give an RX-8 a REAL hard time if that how you want to judge the car.

Until it had to stop or turn... Seriously though, my friend has a cobalt ss supercharged and ghastly looks aside, its a great little car. Granted it has all the liabilites of a FWD car with a lot of power, that said it gets great mpg and scoots along pretty good. Heck its not even that bad in the twisties. I'm not sure which is uglier though, the ss or the ion.

I know somebody autox the redline, and he said GM underrated the hp. They dyno just as much at the wheel as GM claim at the crank. Ouch.

And my neighbor's truck has suicide doors too, I wonder which one's better...they both drink gas and RWD, so it should be fair.

The Redline/SS actually did better in the slalom in many tests than the RX-8 and the brakes are not bad.

Next time there's a slalom on the front straight of Lime Rock Park, I'll be sure to point the ion redline by. I guess the slalom indicates something for autocrossers (maybe I don't know, I haven't autocrossed in ages) but its not a test to split hairs over, ie I have no doubt that the rx8 will turn a faster lap on a road course.

Also, from personal experience, the ss supercharged dead stock will pretty much cook an rx8 in a straight line, but no surprise there, nor do I care.

It would be closer than you think on a road course. Overall the RX-8 is certainly a nicer car but the Redline/SS aren't far behind in the handling department and are a little better in the speed department. They're a pretty good little bang for the buck. Plus, I've heard them and Cavaliers have pretty durable front bumpers, just as Chuck

Yeah cause no one on this board has talked about how the Mazdaspeed 3 (or 6) kicks the **** out of the RX-8 in a bunch of performance numbers. After all, it's just a shitty 260hp 280-torque 4-banger, right?

I didn't say Ion Redline. I said Ion and I mean the the lineup in general. The Cobalt line is a better. When the Ion came out it was savaged by the press. Saturn has tried its best, but it is still ugly, the interior is crap, and the build is suspect.

If it was that great, they wouldn't be dumping the name and car and bringing over the Astra.

Great, and this thread is about the Ion Redline which is essentially the same car as the Coball SS SC.

The platform is the same and the engine is the same, but the suspension tuning is different, the interior is different, and the body materials/shape is different.

I guess it depends on what your definition of essentially the same is.

I wanna judge both cars in a giant octagon demolition derby status. How do we fair then?

Does anyone have the lightning lap numbers? I think both cars were tested in that. Just curious. Probably not that far apart as you said. There are alot of really potent inexpensive cars out there and they certainly have alot to offer. I still like my 8 better than my fiancee's civic si though lol. Although, I give pause when I have to pay the sunoco bill.
