I guess it depends on what your definition of essentially the same is.
Would you say the Eclipse and the Talon were essentially the same? Because they are essentially the same as the SS and the Redline. So in essence what I'm saying is that they're nearly the same, essentially.

The day people stop comparing 8s to every other car in the market, is the day 26b's are emissions legal.

Either get an early 1G or or a later 2G. The early 1Gs didn't have the crank walk issues but they had some other issues that are easily fixed if they haven't been already. The Talon and Eclipse are the same and you can pretty much take your pick, just find a good one and don't let the fact that it's a Talon or an Eclipse sway you. I would just suggest getting the TSI or GSX model, unless of course you like FWD...

Had the Saturn a few year back and it suck. Traded in for some other car. And how in the world would anyone compare it to the RX8. Must we compare it to every frigging car out there.

Ok...well to actually talk about the subject matter in the header. The RX-8 R&D with ingress and egress for rear passengers was very proficient and vitally important for Mazda. In reading the RX-8 book, Mazda used Saturns design of rear doors as what not to do. Mazda spent quite a bit of time with many subjects testing human muscle dynamics.

Just test it yourself, sit in the backseat and open/close the door and feel how easy it is. You don't need to reach far with your arm and the hinge mechanism was developed with notches and humps to flow the door closed with ease.

Just to elaborate a little more on what Ike said. All my knowledge is concerning the 2nd Gen's, as I owned a Talon TSi AWD. The only differences between the two are cosmetic. Head/Tail lights, hood, and bumpers. Ohh, and the Talon's had black roof's that were coated in some type of plastic, and faded or cracked after awhile. I do agree with Ike, the only way to go is TSi AWD (Talon), or GSX (Eclipse). The TSi, TSi AWD, GST, and GSX all had the turbo charged 4G63 engine, and the ESi, and GS had the crappy Neon engine. It is not possible to transplant a 4G63 into a ESi or GS. Likewise, it is not possible to turn a TSi or GST into a TSi AWD or GSX. Well, I can't say it wasn't possible....but it would cost more money and fabricating then what it is worth. The Eclipse is probably more desirable to own, as there are more body kits available, as well as the resale is higher. If you go with a Talon, you'd have to change headlights, tail lights, and hood in order to fit an Eclipse body kit.

They are great little cars. Stock, you can slap on a EVO VIII turbo, throw in some injectors and fuel management, and play with 400hp all day long. Anymore than that, and you have to start changing more things. They handle well, but not like your 8.

Yup, the Ion and Cobalt are basically as close as cars get. The Cobalt has improved on the Ion's mistakes and thus gets decent reviews in the segment but they are still Delta platform cars and thus share drivetrains, etc.

I think Ike and some of the other open minded and experience drivers of each stated it best. The Pros and Cons of both the Saturn and RX-8 they do have things in common like the sucided doors, 0-60 speed and practicality. I found it interesting that the Saturn Ino turned out to be the Cobalt SS w/o the s-doors which is a pretty respectable chevy.

I also found this thread interesting in that it was mentioned that Mazda studied the mistakes that Saturn made to improve Rx-8. So though some of you think nothing but a Ferrari can compare equally with your precious 8s. Some brought it home giving prop to both vehicles. Nobody even thought that the Saturn could compete with the Great RX-8 in build quailty but overall Practicality, daily driving and Track the things the 8 gets kudos for the numbers are close.

I was trying to highlight that Mazda makes a hell of a car, one company design the Saturn was similar and gets no Love, and the RX-8 people love their car so much they complain like the Porsche owner's do when you compare a 8 or Z car to the famous and popluar German Sport car the Porsche. Porsche has taken 35 years to build this "Can't touch this attitude" the RX-8 only been out for 3 years.

Winning every comparison and in most movies dealing with techno Cars and Mutants.

This is price you pay for being popular, other cars are going to be compared to your 8 anything and everything thats even close. You should take a bow instead shake your head no way. Like Imitation, comparison is a sign of success.

Lets keep it real the Rx-8 is a 3 year old popular Sports Car, its not a Bentley. I say if its getting old and you already know these things try to submit something positive bc Comparison are going to happen. Its almost like the Stars saying," I get so F%^% tried of the papirriza", Gusse what welcome to Hollywood, your'e a Star.

Don't worry he was always raving about the ecotec engine and how great it is (you can get it in the Ariel Atom I believe). I just meant the car was lacking in driving fun and styling. Although it he did modify the hell out of it.

I have had some awfully negative encounters with SS/Redline owners, but of course I don't want to generalize. Many of the owners I have talked to base all their opinions off of "magazine stats", IE just the numbers and professionally done 0-60 and 1/4 mile times and pretty much think that they've got supercars. Much like SRT-4 owners, they were exceptionally cocky and didn't want to look at anything beyond the stats to make sweeping judgements of superiority.

Likely it was the extra cocky owners who got involved in a couple of these "forum wars" and so left a bad taste in my mouth. SVT Focus vs. SS/Redline and SRT-4 got very very old, even though we regularly did just as well or better on track and at the Auto-X.

If you define a drag race from a roll as the be-all-end-all of automotive performance, then these are extremely strong performers. If you don't, then you might as well not even try to argue because every owner of said vehicle I have talked to does have that outlook and won't be swayed.

Between those cars mentioned I'd take a Mazda RX-8 or Mazda Speed6 or Mita or Millinia over any of the before mentioned vehicles. Mazda makes a better car no doubt despite what the stats sheet say the Neon is a dog and a Turbo charge is just a fast dog reliability wise. Saturn makes good cars but I hate their dash gauges to the right of driver idea. The only dodge I'd own is the Truck, the Viper maybe the Crossfire.

Of the speed carts The Evo or Subaru WRX are the only standouts to me only the Subaru compares roughly to Mazda build quailty.

Who would win:

VS.

Person 1: They are both red...but I think the 3 wheeler will take the wagon in the qwatter...

Person 2: You're an idiot! Gosh! Everyone knows the wagon is made for the TWISITES and not drag racing!

Person 1: Yeah but if you put better tires; intake; exhaust; and a 3.5 rear diff, the wagon could pull some impressive times---look, C&D did a comparo!

Person 2: Yeah, but if you put the same mods on the trike, plus widen the wheel base and spend some time in a good drifting school (best mod) then the trike would win!

Person 1: Yeah...but on Tuesday if I hold my breath for 35 seconds, spin counter-clockwise under the summer solstice and eat 3 colves of garlic--I'd win!

Person 1: You're an idiot! Gosh! Becha, if I num-chuck you while you were peddling your torque moster-trike, then I'd win.

Person 2: Shut up! You're so stupid!

Person 1: No, you shut up! You're stupid!
*Num-chucks Person 2*

Person 2: Ouch! Gosh, why would you do that?!

Person 1: Because everything is hypothetical and I actually did something REAL.

Snizzle I'm sorry I didn't live up to your high standards. Some of us were not born snobs expecting the best from everything we are around some us except things for what they are. I take it you don't like the Crossfire, thats fine thats your opinion, mines is that its a pretty decent car just old technology. Its based on the Mecedes Benz SLK coupe which was a fairly decent car, that even a snob like you might would like. Anyway this is really gonna slam you, the only Chevys I like are The Vette, Monte Carlo and the Retro Camaro, blow that out your chrome exhaust pipe. So what I don't measure up to what you expect I'll jum,p off Talhassee bridge, Not. Take a Chilli Pill, Mr. Snob.

Snizzel that sounds like snoop dog, but I ain't hating.

Dude, take it easy....

NO ONE on this forum likes the "X-fire!" It's a long running joke. It's so bad that no one even says "c-r-o-s-s-you-know-what" out of fear of being banned. It's like the boogey man or them damn creatures from M. Night Shyamalan’s move..."The Village."
You know, the one's that "don't have names" or whatever.

Relax.

And btw, these "X" vs. "Y" threads are just dumb. They really are.

Tell that to Motor Trend, Car & Driver and Road and Track. I like seeing the camparios and how bias or tangibles rule not facts from the test results.

I'm a newbie to being a RX-8 club snob, I need time to shrink.

You can't compare these cars, sure the Red line may have done better in the slalom. In the end, just drive both cars, I'm sure you'll love the 8 more, if you don't then get a red line.

The problem is you have to dig through the turd of a car to be able to get to the gem of an engine. Don't get me wrong. I think the Ion quad coupe is a great concept, but the materials and workmanship are worth the $2,000 the car costs. ...

Oh wait a minute... It costs $20,000!!??!! OH hell no, with that cheap looking single texture plastic dash and that wierd center mounted instrument "pod" ( I don't even like it on the Scions, anfd they actually put some thought into attempting to make it somewhat stylish)
