I totally agree that the track is the ideal place to explore limits. But then what do you do with that experience? When the Andretti's go on a family road trip, do they limit their speed to 80 mph out of a concern for safety? I thoroughly expect that they drive at a speed where they feel safe. A speed that they ARE safe.
You race some more, do it as a hobby, or professionally...

But, I know...I understand the "need for speed" thing but this is what I tell myself. If I hurt someone else...or took my parents son, my brother or sisters brother while doing something completely useless and unnecessary (regarding the first instantance...how could I live with that?) I would not want to have that weigh on me for the rest of my life.

I try to respect and not hurt anyone, so I tend to be safe on the road..."tend" to be, I'm not perfect and have done stupid things on the road.

I get what you are saying, we all take some risk...but I pray that you and anyone around you will be safe when you decide to take yours. The reward is not worth your life or someone elses.

But again, I understand that if you want to be safe all the time..."You would never enjoy life"

I just got, on my first tank of gas (Citgo 93), 19.73mpg in the city or 252.5 miles on 12.8 gallons of fuel...so 300+ in the highway is not impossible.

Keep in mind it was my first tank and I was told things could change for the worse...I PRAY it does not!

Ah....road trip for me this past weekend....255 miles on a full tank!! I filled her up on Shell V-Max and drove at approx 80-85mph w/ one quick blast to 115mph. I'm happy with that. Maybe next time I will try 91 octane. Also, I thought it was a US federal mandate that manfacturers designes cars to do 400 miles on a full tank???

Anyone heard that before???

I have never cracked 20 mpg in my 8 on the few long trips that I've made with it . . . but then I was cruising 80-90 mph usually. 15 gallons at 20 mpg will get me to 300 miles, but the most I've pushed it to is about 290 miles. I think at a steady 65 mph I'd probably get about 23-25 mpg, so I think 325 miles is doable, but I don't have the patience for that experiment!

I have run out of gas at 252 miles also in Northern Virginia urban driving.

I know what you mean, but if you get stuck in fog like I did, you don't need patience. It becomes a matter of survival.

Regarding running out of gas in the 8, it would make for an interesting poll. The two answers I'd offer are:

A. Those who have.
B. Those who won't admit to it.

That seems about right. Since buying the 8 I've averaged around 16.5, with ~90% NOVA traffic, ~10% highway. 16.5 would suggest a theoretical maximum of 262 miles, though I'm too paranoid to push my luck, especially if I risk running out in the middle of the Springfield Interchange (aka the sausage grinder, aka Malfunction Junction). I usually refill within a few miles of the warning light coming on, to the tune of about 13.5 gallons. Best tank so far was 240 miles.

Um, no. I wasn't talking on my cell phone at the time.

I've shared my safety record here. And with all the three digit driving I've done in the RX-8, I'll add the fact that I've gotten a total of zero speeding tickets so far. Learning how to avoid police is another thing I've learned to do through years of trial and error. (For anyone interested, I haven't used a radar detector since the 80's.)

Maybe someone here will persuade me that my actions have been stupid. I certainly admit that it is an unnecessary risk. But if you search the forums you'll find that there are plenty of members here who have shared stories about maxxing out their speed. Have all of us been acting wreckless? Certainly there are those who have crossed the line into the Dangerous zone. The RX-8 fatalities as a bare minimum. But I maintain my belief that there are smarter ways to push the envelope.

The RX-8 has Carpe Diem woven into its DNA. Many of us didn't buy the car just for its looks. We want to know what it is capable of, and what we are capable of.

fwiw - You had to expect speedophobes to flame you, Zatem.

Some people just can't deal with others' ability to control their car; they set 'magical, pulled from thin air' 'maximum safe speed' numbers. :-/

150mph is only unsafe in context. In another context, I'd bet 250 would be safe on some roads.

...and the weight you had in the car? That won't affect your top speed; not to any measurable difference.

Nice job

again - I fail to see how anyone can't understand how holding a camera pointed at one's dash is somehow dangerous?

Just hold the wheel, w/ one's left hand - bring the camera in front of one's chest, snap a few pics.

Easy.

lol you can be the best driver in the world and have a shot of really crapy luck. temp fate enough times..eventuall she catches you. just my 2 cents.

Now back on track...Zatem..i wish you would go to a track...well al ong track so you could top out your car. mine stops in 6th at 148 (stops in 5th at about 149-150)...wondering what yours does as we seem to have different flashes. i don't think you'll see what the 8 can really do (even if yours isn't governed) b/c she doesn't have enough hp/tq to hit her max speed (unless you go to dry lake bed but even then i'm not sure if she can over come the coefficeint of drag at those speeds)

edit: and i know i've said it befor but i can't help it..i am sooo jealous of your mpg:D

150 + mph

Those that have visited the -out of country regions know, the RX8 has earned its stripes as a serious autobahn contender- several are now on military bases in europe, and have embarassed a few-"well known" brands"

actually, speed does not kill, it's the abrupt stop which does.

it's nice to know the "8" will go that fast though.

My wife regularly hits 300 miles fill-up to fill up in her auto when going to and from work. If there is driving around town, then it drops to the 225-250 range.

Last night the amber came on and she was at 270 mles.
