lost my oil fill cap!!! how bad since I drove? replacment?

I cant believe I did this, but I went to check my oil tonight (been 2-3 weeks sinc elast check- maybe 2 tanks of gas) and my cap is missing. I guess I must not have tightened it!!! Though it was there when I pulled the Canzoomer unit out about a week ago....

1- How bad is this for the engine since I drove at least several times like this? My oil was only down 1/8th of a quart from last time. ANything I can do for it now since a vacuum seal was open?

2- Are the threads on a mazda cap different than others cars- can I get one at R&S Strausse or other parts store?

Thanks in advance......

Ouch. I'm guessing your engine compartment has oil residue from the splattering. Thus, your oil level is probably low. If you "driven" your car dirt particles would of gotten inside your engine... maybe an oil change to be safe. I would just run to the nearby partshop or dealer to buy a replacement cap. If you have to drive, drive real slow and don't push your car.

I am scheduled for an oil change on tuesday at the dealer. I looked- there seems to be no oil splattered anywhere in th engine compartment. Maybe I should have a second change done pretty soon after that to get more of the oil out. I Need a replcaemnt quick and can't wait for mail order.

You can always do what many others have done that I have seen while waiting for it to come...stick a rag in it...just make sure it is a clean rag. :D

Wow I guess you're ok if you've only lost 1/8 quart. I forgot the cap once on a piston engine and the entire underside of the hood was drenched in a couple of minutes. I guess the filler tube isn't over anything that slings oil.

Just cover it with a plastic bag. Don't forget in our cars the pan is just that, it doesn't have moving engine parts through it like a piston engine. It is just a reservoir for the oil there is no pressure ect . Just change it and get a new cap.

FWIW: If you take a rotary engine apart meaning you take the oil pan off, there is nothing open down there. The only thing in the pan is the oil pickup and the low oil level sensor.

But if the oil cap was off, I'd fill your oil up (to get the rest of the dirt and dust out of the filler neck) and then do an oil change right away. The oil filter should take care of the rest. Also, I'm liking the clean rag idea as a temporary (non-lint one too.) or hit your local junk yard and pick up any mazda oil cap as they should work or go to your local napa and ask them for a mazda oil cap.

I am suprised that didn't generate a CEL

I would put a plastic bag with a rubber band around it till I got my new one to keep dust out and splashing in

So far as I know, the only place he's selling them is on ebay. I'll send him an email and ask if it's possible to sell out right then PM you about it if I get any information to the contrary.
