Lost keys, what are my options?

I lost my only key to my 05, what exactly are my options? It had the switchblade fob/key. I really dont want to pay a fortune to the dealer, I also really dont care about having a fob (just a key would be just fine). So can I buy a blank transponder key and have the dealer cut it from my vin? Or do i have to buy a new fob and have the key cut, then program it myself?

Check out this DIY post:

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-do-...orscan-262637/

It says you need 1 key, but the FORScan thread it links to talks about erasing all keys and starting from scratch. You just need to make sure you have 2 blank transponder keys.

Thanks for that, but I dont see where it talks about atrting from scratch. And by two blank transponders you mean two cut keys that havent been programmed yet right?

In s-rx8's DIY post, he links to the FORScan forums:

FORScan forum ? View topic - How to program PATS using FORScan v2.2.*

On that page you'll see where it talks about erasing all programmed keys. You should make sure to read everything in s-rx8's post, all the comments on that thread, and also the whole FORScan post. Otherwise you might miss something and it'll get messed up.

Yes, I meant two transponder key blanks that have been cut for your car, but haven't been been programmed for your car yet. The reason I said 2 is because at the bottom of the FORScan post, it says some cars won't start unless there are 2 keys programmed into the car's memory.

Your best option is to just pay the dealer for a new set of keys. Bring your proof of ownership and when they make the key, it should include the FOB. Not sure if they will allow you to just purchase the key without the FOB.

You can buy a basic key with no fob but the transponder still has to be programmed.

The dealer can access the key code for your car. With that they can cut a new key. As stated, you don't have to get the fob, you can just get a key and have it programmed. The 04 RX-8 came with a key only, no fob so they should be readily available. The dealer will be the place to go to have this done of course. You will need proof of ownership and have to have the car towed there. Time to get a couple keys made after this experience.
