Looking at buying an RX8

Hey Im looking at getting an Rx-8 and im going to test drive one tomorrow. But I got some questions

Has there been any problems with the central ring gear or the fixed pinion wearing out prematurely?

Have any of you had problems with the rotary seals, or excessive oil consumption?

And what kind of mileage are you getting out of these cars?

Any tranny problems?

Also whats the bolt pattern? I got a set of 18x8 TSW Thruxtons on my GTS that got brand new Falken FK 452 225 40 ZR18. Celicas bolt pattern is 5 x100. Im hoping these will fit an RX-8.

Is there any particular years to avoid? I know for 7thgen celicas 02 was a bad year b/c the ECU utilized a lower revlimiter so im just trying to get some info. Plus the C60 tranny had problems with the synchros for 3rd and 4th and the shift sleeve as well.

I walked in blind when I bought my 03 celica gts and got ripped off. auto gts celicas should be outlawed. 6spds GTS are decent but I love FDs and FCs so im interested in the RX-8. RWD will be nice too. Personally I love the handling of my celica, its just the auto is so gutless off the line, plus the gear ratios are horrible.

Any info would be much appreciated.

I'm a newbie too and the first thing basically said was use the search,so wait for it. From my experience, out of the box the rx8 will handle better than your celica. The wheels won't fit, I'm pretty sure the bolt pattern is 5x114.3. I have been told you can expect around 23-25 mpg highway, not sure about city.

i just did some research, these cars sure as hell aren't cheap to maintain. These things go through oil like nobodies business. Guess thats the price to pay for running a Wankel engine. these things prolly have brutal emissions. A guy should just buy a stang, pay the 5grand to swap out the solid rear end for independent suspension, and call it a day.

i have to say it's the most true sportscar you can buy for the money. It does everything exceptionally well and can carry 4 people to boot. Although it's small, it is not an economy car so don't buy it if you want gas savings. Gas mileage is around 4mpg less then most 3.5L 6 cyls on the hwy. The car is engineered extremely well and can give years of enjoyment. The kwirks have been worked out and it is a very reliable vehicle. It has intrinsic classic sportscar styling and character. If you like that then it is the car for you. I would say it's not the car for anyone who does not understand or appreciate the intrinsic value of this car.

^With only 2 posts to his name luck is probably on our side and right now, as we speak, he's probably down at the local Ford dump picking his pride and joy.

Got a flu or something been to sick to leave the house for a few days. But I'll still take out the RX-8 for a test drive. So far though this is what I have test driven

-08 2.0 T/C Jetta hatchback
-90 Supra 1JZ-GTE stock twins, intercooled, Twin plate clutch, TEIN Coilovers, RSR Exhaust
-03 Mustang GT stock
-08 Civic SI
-06 S/C Cobalt SS
-04 Celica GTS 6spd, AEM CAI, RPS MWR ULT ZZ clutch, Chromoly flywheel, Ralco Short thro
-An old school AE86. Definitely a sleeper. Flat black paint job, 14" rims, 300,000 kms on the car. Burns a little oil, Pop the hood..oh snap, S/C, intercooler(tiny looks like an oil cooler), I forget the exhaust but loud as hell, but damn defintely the cream of the crop when it comes to drifting. This little unit actually beat all these cars off the line. Im not looking at buying it but damn sure was fun to drive. Obvously the supra is faster in the 1/4 but that little corolla definitely has *****.

The best of the lot right now id have to say hands down for the supra. The cars at a good price and to buy a car and then buy these parts seperate would cost a fortune. I know im comparing apples and oranges with F/I and N/A and Fwd and Rwd. But I keep hearing how good the RX-8 handles, I will like to see if it truely has better handling than the supra or the Corolla.

Or even compare it to a stock GT Mustang and see how the Wankel stacks up against american muscle. Im not putting the RX-8 down in anyway..yet I haven't driven one yet, but having driven all the above I got some fairly high expectations. I'll let ya'll know what I think after a test drive, who knows I might just be impressed.

No. 2 qts. of 5W-20 since March. You probably consume more oil in Big Macs & fries.

I'll agree that the stock gts autos are slow and stock gt 5pds or auto celica are slow, But If you put some foot time in with a 6psd gts (not 02 has 7 grand redline vs other years that are 8) and if you have a short thro shifter it is possible to shift into lift. Would prolly still lose in a 1/4 mi with the rx-8 but not buy much. Id be curious to race an rx-8 in a time attack course against a 6pd gts.

With the autos you can modify the valve body get a high stall TC combine that with a Blitz S/C kit, power FC and you got an rx-8 beatdown. This setup is reliable vs greddy turbo kit which utilizes E-Manage piggy back --> Garbage IMO plus run anymore than 8psi on stock internals with the 11.5 :1 compression ratio of a 2zz u going to grenade that motor quick.

But I guarantee the supra im looking at will put a serious beating on 90% of the rx-8s. This car has beat down several turbo'd FC rx-7s. 1JZ-GTEs are sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet. But with that twin plate, this car ain't going nowhere in winter.

I am a bit into racing, but can't afford it so just trying to go with the best all round daily driver. Its easy to trash talk about vehicles which u know nothing about.

It sounds to me that you're into straight lines. rx8 is one of the worste decisions you can make if you want to run a straight real fast. dig or not. If you want to drift this car... its still the worste of the rwds you picked out. rx8 can just grip and hold turns real well.

Basically, not a fun car unless you live by mountains/canyons etc.

My opinion of course, take what you want.
