License plate cover help from the "paparazzi"

I tried the search on this but couldn't find what I was looking for. Lately in the Washington DC area there has been quite the problem with the "paparazzi" taking pictures of our license plates. They are also getting ready to take photos of cars that don't pay their tolls - this shouldn't be a problem for me as I have purchased the EZ Pass transponder and have it set up to automatically charge to my credit card. Unfortunately the wonderful people maintaining the toll booths don't always have the electronic eyes set up correctly so sometimes they don't register and I would like to avoid going through the hassle of being accused of not paying just because their system doesn't work.

Does anyone have any license plate covers they would recommend placing on my car so that the plate can't be seen when photographed? I would prefer tinted, but I am looking to buy clear since as soon as I buy them and put them on I'm sure I'll get pulled over for having tinted plate covers and have to replace them. Any recommendations would be appreciated!

there is a spraycan that you can spray over the plate, that makes the plate real shiney. it is suposed to just show a glare on the picture from the flash. i dont know if it works. you can type in google "spray beat traffic cameras"

Buy a rotating license plate that has a fake number on the other side.

I thought that Mythbusters did this and there wasn't anything that really beat them, but maybe something new came out. I got busted by one in DC once.

Yes, they did do an episode on these devices. They tried four different ones, and none of them did anything to stop the photograph.

There's no way around it, and if you get pulled over with one... the cop will -not- be nice to you.

Just set up your license plate bracket on a flip down hinge. You can release it so it drops just before you get to the booth and have a cable pull it back up immediately after you pass through. Shouldn't be too hard to do.

I saw a cover that actually worked like a calculator. When electrical current is applied it is clear but when you flip a switch it turns mostly opaque.

Unfortunately I don't know where to get them.

In our state, they have a system in case the transponder isn't picked up. The license plate number is registered to that specific transponder. When they take your picture, they check it against a database and find you on it. They know it was a glitch and don't issue a ticket. You can register several plates against that transponder, in case you move it from one car to another.
Making a plate shine would allow laser speed devices to work better.

Those *Spray* doesnt work. if it works EVERYBODY would get them. you dont even need myth busters to prove that.

I had those Ezpass problems a few times, but I just went up to ezpass's site, select Violations, and dispute the ticket. dont have to pay any extras.

By the way, in the not so distant future, all cars will be set up with RFID- there will be no need for license plates, as the police will simply obtain your vehicle and driver info from the comfort of their cars.

License plates will be around for a long time. What are witnesses to a crime going to say? It was a blue civic?

You can temporarily disable RFID or destroy it. I don't see it working on a car.

My thanks to everyone who responded, especially to:

NoTears316 for saving me some money (and liking pie)

alnielsen for the info on his state's system - I have one in all 3 cars and registered to the car it is in, so hopefully EZ Pass will be the same as IL

nycgs for letting me know I can dispute the tickets via the website.

Worth every cents considering the amount of sneaky cams around these days waiting to catch you out & steal your money.

You're hitting the pipe too hard if you think that works.

the link also states that you CAN beat the photo by driving too fast for the camera to take the picture....... but you would have to be doing 170 mph or over.

If you're driving 170mph+ through every day traffic, you have more to worry about then just getting a ticket.

I've seen a car driving around with those plates before. The problem is that if a police car pulls up behind you, to the side at a 45 degree angle you can see that the plate is distorted by the cover. You may find yourself getting pulled over and a ticket for obstucting a license plate.
