Launching the rx8

Im bringing my 8 to the drag strip for the first time this weekend. I wanted to know the perfect way to launch it. You know like what rpm to rev it to and all that other stuff. Im a noob so if you could be easy on the flaming i would appreciate it. Thanks for your help i know its not a drag racing car and more of a track car but im going with my friends

Youre telling a swimmer to swim on land. But its your choice. Rev to 5k then dump the clutch.

Put it in "R" for Race. Rev it up. dump the clutch, hold on

Seriously, this has been covered, but your best options are mid rpm (5k or so) and light clutch work, or high rpm (7k and up) and a whole lot of clutch work. Either should get you decent times, both can ruin the clutch and break drivetrain components.

well better than bogging down cuz he dumped the clutch at 3k rpm. thats very embarrassing on a drag strip.

Go big or go home: 9.5k dump, drop in new clutch, rinse, repeat.

It's best to just let it stay in the parking lot and save yourself the embarassment.

Actually OP, if you could get it on vid and post here, that would be sweet! (as long as you leave your dignity out of it ) Go with friends and have fun! Just don't brag that you'll win, and don't get pissy when the crowd laughs at your time...

This certainly isn't a drag car by any means. Lol. I'm fairly confident that my old 01 Stratus with a 3.0 and 5 speed could have had comparable 1/4 mile times :P

Fasten your seat belt, press the clutch, shift it to 1st gear..... then zoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom your way to the finish line, no matter how long you get there

It also depends on your tires!!! IF you have really gay tires (like my 3 year old dunlops summer tires) launching is gonna be hard! I wasnt able to launch above 4k cuz my tires would just spin and i wouldnt move! i tried 6k and in was BAD! And DONT forget to take the traction control off ( hold the button for 10 seconds)

PS you are not gonna win a single race... lol but it is lots of fun!

I just searched this topic, I should of did that from the beginning instead of making a new thread. It seems like 5k is probably my best bet, i got new tires so it shouldnt be a problem... i figure Ill just put it in R for race, turn off my traction control and launch haha

I just got one more question that i didnt see in the other threads. Do i rev out first gear all the way? or should i switch at a certain rpm

You rev just before the limiter ... so you change gear just before you see 9500 ...

You need every change to be as high as possible because that’s where your torque is ....

Good luck

Go easy on em, at least he is on the strip and not the street, and he understands the use of the car and is just looking to have fun with friends thats all. Its not like hes cutting springs or asking how much horzepowahhz he can get for cheap.

Uhm new tires aren't the best idea at a drag strip because well they wont be new for long.

Also if you don't know how to heat your tires before a run well you should probably practice. Cold tires will slip on you costing you time.

Please don't stall it on the track you will bring embarrassment to other RX8 owners. People remember that kinda stuff :P "Hey joe you remember that time that idiot import owner stalled at the strip"

I find that while minorly slipping the clutch at 4k and then just dumping on the throttle and clutch is a good way to launch. Slipping the clutch is going to burn it out faster though.

Have fun, keep your slips if you can and tell us what you got!
