Last of the 2011s

From reliable source - through next week is it for the RX-8 here in the states.
No more 2011 production of LHD, no more shipments, no more ad promotion.
The Mazda plug is pulled and those of you wanting a new one will have to find em on dealer lots. How long will we wait for the next rotary vehicle ?

I just got mine...so I'll be keeping it. Plus now it only has 8k miles. It's quirky..but fun and one of a kind. Rotary, that is....

No more ad promotion??? I haven't seen an ad for the RX-8 in about five years!

On a positive note, perhaps current owners will see stronger resale into the future as a result of Mazda pulling the plug and not announcing any solid plans for a replacement.

One can hope anyway...

The one we have now is good, and that's an understatement.

not saying its bad, but im pretty sure mazda had higher expectations, but once they put in direct injection that should improve fuel economy and especially flooding

Probably won't see the new 7 or 8 or new 9 (or whatever it'll be called) till the 16x is fully ready. And if Mazda of north America builds it as well as they rebuild engines, I won't buy one lol. I hope they keep importing them. Japan and Europe have much higher standards than they do here.

Back in '06, shortly after I bought mine, I saw the RX-8 TV commercial a few times. It was on Speed, and I think during races where Mazda had some sponsorship position.

Cute ad. The one where the RX-8 owner and his 8 hug each other, the 8 using the two doors on one side. It's up on youtube. There are a few others on line, but I never saw them in an actual broadcast.

and the sad part is the 16x is gonna be so underpowerd by then when comparing it to other cars

Yeah, that was the only ad that stands out for me too. I can remember seeing that one back to around the date of introduction of the 8. I think the wife peeks in to the garage at the end and has a "concerned" look on her face!

But seriously, a buyer has to really want to own an RX-8 and be prepared to do the legwork to find one at a dealer. It's like Mazda just plain gave up on selling this car a few years ago. They need to take a good portion of the blame, IMHO, for recent lackluster sales figures.

We have one fantastic car but the buying public has no clue, and you can't blame them for not knowing since it's nearly impossible to even test drive one at your local dealer since they're rarely found on the lots.

I just sold my Silver '04 that I've owned since new and have secured a Velocity Red R3.
Our other cars are an S-Line A4 Avant (my wife's car) and a BMW Z4 (summer only car). When I started thinking about selling my 8 I did some intensive car shopping and research and nothing came even close to matching the R3 in terms of driving enjoyment at the price I paid.

Sure, I'd like an Audi RS4 or maybe an S5 but neither handles as well as the 8 and both cost 2-2.5 *times* the cost of my new R3. Simply not worth it and illustrative of just what a bargain our cars are.

Well if I'm thinking correctly the 13b we have now makes 232 HP. That's 178 HP per liter. 232 divided by 1.3. so it stands to reason that the 16x will make at least 285 HP. 178 times 1.6 liter. Which is on par with evo's and sti's.

That's not quite how it works.. but the point being, yes power will be greater and it may seem sufficient now.. but will it be sufficient then?

yeah thats what i meant. Yes the evo has 300 hp but 290 torque! theres no way the 16x can do 290 torque NA and yes the evo and sti are the cars with lower power right now if you compare it with a mustang gt, 370z, any muscle car, m3s,etc so in 5 years 300 hp might not be enough but im sure if the car weights the same or less than the 8 we will have a champ

You know what, why not just make a piston engine rx8? It will have fewer problems and it will create a larger broad of customers. Maybe, somebody will take note and think about this idea, if they want the rx8 back into the market.

^hmmm NO!!

Actually the rx3 model not sure if any other models came with a piston engine. I dont think it was called rx3 the non rotary model but it was the same body. The proof? My family had on when I was little lol

But just power isn't enough. The evo and sti will beat any 425 HP muscle car on a track and in terms of build quality. The m3 is way more expensive so it doesn't count IMO. I do like the 370z though. But that's a 2 seater. If Mazda makes the next Gen rx a 300 HP car with the price build quality and styling and practicality of the 8, it'll be fantastic. IMO if our 8's had 300 HP it would have been unstoppable in the sales dept.

No it won't. There are plenty of cars with piston engines out there to choose from. The RX8 (and the prior RX cars) are unique due to having a rotary engine. I would have bought a different car if it didn't have the rotary engine.
