Ah, this week's RX-8 vs. S2000 thread. Although there's still one alive, so maybe this is today's RX-8 vs. S2000 thread.
As someone else said, only you can make the emotional decision. We have both cars. I rarely choose the RX-8 to drive unless I need the extra room; I rarely choose the S2000 when I need to take two or more people with me. That's my personal feeling for the two cars, both of which are excellent cars for what they were intended to do.
These are very different cars, fundamentally. Do you want a four-seat coupe? The choice is easy. Do you want a convertible? The choice is easy. Is pure driving pleasure/performance the deciding factor, even at the expense of comfort and practicality? The S2000 wins that one. Do you actually care about comfort and room? The RX-8 would be your car, in that case (with the caveat that, if you're tall, the sunroof seriously detracts from the "roominess" of the RX-8--my head grazes the ceiling, and I'm 6'2").
Gas mileage--I average 25mpg on my daily commute with the S2000, and a little over 30mpg on pure highway driving. My wife averages a very consistent 15mpg on her daily commute with the RX-8, on a commute on which our Honda Odyssey minivan averaged 19mpg. We've never taken a real road trip with the RX-8, so I don't know what it's pure highway mileage would be.

From what I gather, I think he is set on trading in his S2000 for more room
