As far as the law being pointless, I am going to say I like the law. If I see blue lights coming down the street or from behind me I dont want to wonder if it is a Cop, I want to know it is a cop, get out of the way and let them do their job. It might be my family or friends they are going to help.
BTW, cops have red and blue flashing lights on the roof top of the car..HID lights with blue parking lights looks nothing like police lights..

I concur with Highway8 to a great extent.

Personally, I'd love to red-out a car, but I understand why it's illegal. As he mentioned above, the laws are in place to avoid confusion. I know I wouldn't want to see red lights flying down the road at 70mph in my direction, whether it was the lane next to me or not.

I know Wikipedia isn't the most credible source, but this article has the snippet below:

In the United States, colors are generally regulated at the state level, but there are some commonalities.

* Red almost always denotes an emergency vehicle if the lights are facing forward.
* Amber or Yellow lights are often used by vehicles such as construction vehicles, tow trucks, funeral escorts, security patrol vehicles or other vehicles which may be stopped or moving slower than the flow of traffic. Amber is usually the most permissively regulated color.
* White is often used as an optional color on lightbars, though it may be restricted to emergency vehicles in some states. It is rarely used as the only color on a lightbar, though Arkansas, Rhode Island, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, Maryland, West Virginia and Kentucky require flashing white beacons on school buses. Certain railroad-related machines, like fueling tankers or switching engines, may also use a flashing white light.
* Green on a fire chief's car or a mobile command post denotes the command vehicle on scene; this usage derives from the use of green flags in the Incident Command System. Green can also denote a volunteer firefighter or EMT's vehicle in some states. In some states, green is used by private security guards.
* Blue is reserved for law enforcement in some states, while in others it is used by volunteer firefighters and EMTs. In New Mexico, tow trucks have blue lights. Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Minnesota, and Nebraska also use blue lights on snowplows.[30][31][32]
* Purple is permitted in some states to denote a funeral vehicle.[33][34][35][36]

That should clear up some delusions that green or purple should be acceptable because they're not on cop cars. To the commenters suggesting, "It's not flashing, therefore I know it's not an emergency vehicle", good for you. You're one of the 10% of cognizant motorists of the road. (This fact is entirely made up, but I'm sure we all believe it to be true, if not high). I don't want to see how much traffic backs up or accidents occur due to the general driving populace misinterpreting someones swapped bulbs.

In summation to this point, yeah, I think it looks cool, but its place is in show, not on the road.

Also, while a little off topic, what the hell is everyone's problem with cops here? I know plenty of people here are pretty savvy when it comes to cars, but I guarantee there are also numerous who are talking out of their asses. Police don't get their jobs because they failed college anymore. Police in my part of the state hold Masters and Doctorate degrees. Cops used to be respected -- now they have a rap just above lawyer. (I'm not sorry to any lawyers here). What the hell happened?

thanks d05 for printing that up and for the rest for defending the law and the cops for doing their job. save me some typing. there are reasons for those laws and their enforcement- don't like it? get it changed don't bitch about getting caught and having them enforced.

definitely not a good idea to disrespect police officers on this forum.

To a certain extent, not enforcing certain laws blunts the effectiveness of all laws.

The law may be dumb and the law enforcement has a job to do and a good portion of that job is to enforce the rule of law so as to keep all laws effective. If you don't like the law, don't blame the guy who's job it is to enforce it. Blame your elected officials.

The only "******* cops" that I've ever run into are the ones that I've pissed off with a bad attitude. You don't have to respect them but it helps to respect the position that their job puts them in. Think about what every day has the potential to bring them and then consider what some dillweed with a 'tude giving him a hard time for keeping all of us safe (directly or indirectly) does to their perception of you.

Also, keep in mind that a large number of criminals are caught on minor traffic stops for silly things like a tail light being out (or the wrong color) or rolling through a stop sign.

i'll never understand why people hate on the police so much.
you'll have morons in ANY position... that doesn't make everyone in that position stupid.
you're complaining about being pulled over when you knowingly break a law... yeah... grow up.
lets see what you say when you're in need of them.

He still pulled me over when I started moving and gave me a ticket for not coming to a "Complete stop". I told him I did come to a complete stop. Guess what he told me? "Well, you are suppose to stop for 3 seconds." I didn't really care since I am sure he is not showing up on court.
I mean..we are paying tax for cops to wait at the stop sign all day giving people ticket?
When I got out from the restaurant, I saw that cop at the same stop sign giving out another ticket. He sure filled out his quota for the month lol.
I seriously think he needs to get a life.
eh..since you actually stopped, you have a special case. but in my city, i'm happy the cops wait there. there are too many jerk offs thinking it's ok to go through stop signs without looking out for other people or pedestrians. last year my friend got t-boned and broke a couple bones and when i was in high school i saw a little boy get hit and thrown off his bike.

i do agree that some cops are bored and looking to harass people for small things, but stop signs are good places for cops to fill their quotas because many people think they're above stopping at signs or red lights.
