just got it, cant drive it

Signed the paper work on my 04 rx8 one month ago today. Heater didnt work when i got it but thanks to these threads was able to fix in a few hours. Was absolutely loving the car until two days ago. Extremely loud bearing noise coming from transmission after sifting through 8 million throw out bearing noise threads i came across one which better described my symptoms as the input shaft bearing. Talked to the dealership yesterday, AS IS NO WARRANTY...was their reply but said they will see what they could do, of course they havnt called back yet. Dropped the transmission today and the input shaft has 1/8 inch play! Was planning on replacing clutch, pressure plate, and TOB, but i broke off two of the bolts holing the pressure plate to the fly wheel. Now im gonna have to replace it as well which is for the better anyhow seeing how its scored and burnt. Looking at about three grand to get it back on the road and i spent all my spare money on the down payment.

Sucks to hear man but you did buy an 8 year old rotary powered sports car with no warranty so the only person to blame is yourself. Even an 8 year old Corolla is bound to have problems here and there.

I do love the car and was expecting a few problems. Just needing to vent. Wasnt ready for huge problems right out of the gate. Plus side is the motor runs beautifully.

At least ill get some bonding time with the car. Under the car time is just as important as driver seat time when it comes to getting to know your car. Its just not as much fun. And costs a lot more.

A thought...

Since it is apart, replace the flywheel with a light one when you put it all back together. I have no idea how hard the input shaft bearing is to replace. I do know there is a cover you can take off. Good luck. I would bring beer if you were in Florida.

actually the flywheel looks sorta normal. you can resurface it and it works just like new, as long as the shop has the right equipment and knows what they are doing. cost me 40 bux.

buying a used car is always a gamble, i bought a fc that was abused the crap out of by previous owners. i trade my honda fit 2 yrs ago and whoever got it should considered themselves lucky, cuz i keep it well even when i know i was gonna sell it

But, light flywheel rocks. Like pulling 300 pounds out of car. Especially in lower gears.

Update.... dealer called me back today (finally) and said they would rebuild my transmission for 260 bucks, seeing as i have already pulled it out and that would save them serious shop time. Gonna order the clutch payday and will have the flywheel turned as soon as i can get that big *** nut off. Dont seem to have enough **** in my britches to break it loose. Gonna have to acquire an impact i suppose.

I rented an electric, 3/4" one from Lowes. off in 10 seconds. Also, a lot safer than wailing on a breaker bar under a car on jackstands...

Is that quote for the tranny rebuild from the same dealer that you got the car from?

The quote for the rebuild is actually not bad, assuming you are bringing the tranny to them since it's already out of the car.

Yeah that's not a bad deal at all. I heard rebuilding transmissions for the 8 do not last very long though and it's just best to dish out the $900 or whatever it is for a new one.

The dealership where i got the car will be doing the work. I cant dish out $900 and get a new one (all the new ones i priced were $2000ish) because i'm broke. I am glad the dealership is gonna help me out. Headed to lowes to see if my store here rents out impacts.

I also had a tranny fail (6th gear lockup) a week or so after buying my car with an "AS IS WARRANTY". FWIW, I raised enough fuss at the dealer to get them to cover the labor on the replacement...just ask for the owner, they are likely to help to keep their reputation intact.
