I love the lip spoiler! I never liked the old RX-8 wing, never had it on mine. Almost looks like a FMIC from the front now, hehe. The vents on the side dont stick out as much on the gray, would like to see them on the blue or red. Overall, I like the body changes. Not really feeling the wheels, I think the old five spoke look better.

Like the gauges.
I much prefer the pop-out SatNAV over this new implementation. Any reasons why they shifted to this design? Cost likely?

It was fake...a glorified dummy switch. There is no oil pressure sending unit, just an "pressure okay, pressure not okay" switch. It will read low pressure only after the ECU detects pressure under a preset point.

Congrats, it looks great. I'm envious!

So tell me something… I happen to really like 5W-20, and believe its fully capable of protecting the engine and plussing mileage a little. So, now that Mazda has gone to the trouble of redesigning the engine's oil metering system, you must tell me… what grade of engine oil is Mazda—doing everything they can to improve Renesis reliability—recommending for the redesigned model?

shiny. I like the nav integration.

I still hate what they did to the front end though...

SWSDuvall, I'm envious of your new '8'. (I no longer own mine {also a 2004}, and I miss it!)

Did you use "premix" with your '04 RX-8? (Such as Protek-R)

Do you feel the need for "premix" with your new machine? (Any 'marbles' sound from the engine?)

Does the new oil injection system eliminate the need for premix?

Hi all,

Tuesday of this week, around lunchtime, I picked up my BRAND NEW 2009 RX-8 Grand Touring with Nav and Premium package (Sirius and moon roof). It's Diamond Gray Metallic and BEAUTIFUL. I bought the car, color sight unseen. The pictures don't do it justice - it's beautiful. EVERYONE comments on the color. The color seems to change a bit - darker, almost greyish in the garage, more champagne in the sunlight.

I plan on taking pics of the Nav and audio system screen shots. The Mazda USA page does a good job on the rest of the car.

In a word: It's TIGHT.

I traded in my Titanium 2004 RX-8 GT (my 4th RX) which didn't really give me any problems that weren't handled via a recall or tech bulletin. But, it had nearly 50k miles on it and was approaching 5 years old.

On to the 2009 - did I say it is TIGHT?!!! The suspension feels tighter than my '04. I love the progressive nature of it. It rides over the bumps wonderfully, but really sucks up the turns (and on ramps ) It is a true "Grand Touring"

The tires are lousy (check out Tirerack.com) - but they work and I don't expect them to last much over 12k miles. They are Ultra High Performance All-Season Dunlop SP 2050's.

The engine feels AMAZING. My friend is the Fleet Manager at my company - he rebuilt his first engine at 7 years old (only kidding), but he's an amazing guy. His first comments on driving it was, they tweaked the engine - there's more low end torque. It may be the gearing, it may be the oil injection - we'll find out more later. But it PULLS - smoothly and consistently. As with our beloved rotary, it LOVES the high RPM's.

The exhaust note is improved - nice, with a small touch of throaty but not at all intrusive.

Bluetooth phone integration - AWESOME!

Nav audio voice commands - amazing.

Fit and finish - more polished, "high end" looking with the additional leather.

Steering wheel - Got used to it quick - it's OK. The leather used to wrap it has a wonderful feel to it.

My first tank I got 16 mpg (actually the same I got with my '04 driving the same route), but it was all city driving. I've only been near red line once as it only has 100 miles on it. The break-in chapter of the manual is one paragraph - basically it says don't abuse it. When I registered the car on MazdaUSA, it I could download the owners manual - a 10 meg pdf. When I get the OK, I'll upload it.

Bought it at University Mazda, Seattle, Wa. Incredible dealer - I HIGHLY recommend them over Lee Johnson or Doug's Lynnwood. PM me and I'll tell you what the sale guys said to my comments on each dealer. The UMazda GM is the previous sales manager - Chris Reeves - been there for years. Some of you may know him from his previous involvement in the RX8 club around Seattle. http://www.umazda.com/

I hope this helps some of you looking for some current information on the '09.

Questions?

Sincerely,

Steve
Awesome purchase! I am looking at the R3 model myself but the dealership near me hasn't received their '09s yet. So tell me, why did you go with the Grand Touring over the R3?

To address your comment about the car's "get up and go", (and i haven't read any other posts besides yours yet so someone may have addressed this already) Mazda changed the gear ratio for the lower end gears. So ya, it's received the well deserved kick in the trunk to get it moving proper!

Engine Pics

Hi all,

crafted_soul - you got your wish

Here are some engine pics. I resized these from 12 megapixels to 800x600. Notice the new electric oil pump on the left side of the engine

New Yorker - The manual "recommends" 5-20 with no mention of any other type.

LTAGFERN - I never did pre-mix on my '04. Never heard any pinging, but in the NW is doesn't get very hot often. I ran 91 octane for a while, then went to 89 and didn't loose much power.

Brettus - you sure are persistent I'll dyno it if someone pays the cost

Obsidian - I went with the GT 'cause I love the creature comforts

I used to think I liked the front end, now I'm sure I don't, there is way too much plastic on it, I do like the new lights tho with that cat iris blinker.

gratz on a new one! I like the 3 point sway bar on the front too

I like the rear better than last gens, but I'm not a fan of the grill. I like what they did with the nav screen too. Congrats!

Are you an actual engineer? Because as a real mechanical engineer (one of many here) I know that generally I don't go for the best performance or the best reliability. Rather I work to compromises and design to a spec that is generally pretty cost driven.
