Angry Idiot hit my Rx8

I have some horrible news...Saturday night I was going out to dinner with my girlfriend. As I was entering the intersection of Harbor and Wilshire in Fullerton, some jackass in a Dodge Dakota ran the red light and plowed into my Rx8. He spun us into a 180...luckily we didn't hit anyone on the street. The cops who were investigating the scene said he didn't even make an attempt to stop since there were no screech marks. Fortunately my girlfriend and I are both ok...other than some aches and bruises. The guy in the Dodge said he was talking to his buddies and the next thing he knew he hit me....nice. Thank God we are both ok...the 8 held up extremely well considering we were T-boned by a friggin' truck(pictures to follow). My only concern is the damage was done to the rear of the car and the rim is bent at an angle...also the rear suicide door doesn't open...if they decide not to total the car how will this affect the handling and performance? I've already modified the car with a Racing Beat exhaust, intake etc. Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated-Jeff

Sorry to hear about that man. It's good to hear you and your gf are in good shape and the 8 kept you safe. Did all the airbags (front and side) go off? And how fast was the guy going? For the 8 to be totalled, the damage(repair) would have to be more than the value of the car. My only concern would be a bent frame, then the car will not be the same again no matter how good the body shop is. Good luck!

Ouch!

How do the rest of the doors operate? If the doors on both sides of the car don't operate, that means the entire unibody is out of alignment and they will likely total the car. If just the door that was hit doesn't open, it probably isn't a total. Luckily, you did get spun and that took away much of the impact energy.

Fuhgedabout the car. You guys are alive and unhurt.

I never look forward to reading posts such as yours, but thank the good lord you both are ok. I agree with czr, the description you have given without further review would indicate that the car is probably a loss. But the passengers were not, the car can be replaced it is the precious cargo inside that is the most imoportant....Good luck and glad to hear you are well

I see you're in the OC, and I know that exact intersection. Where did you have it towed? I can recommend the Collision Center at Tustin/Heritage Mazda. Mine is there being worked on after a severe rear-ender collision (by a Dodge Dakota as well) and they seem to do very good work. Ask for John SoFranko. I'm glad you're both okay, but please do get checked out by a doctor... I ended up having ruptured discs in my neck. Don't be tempted to sign a check from the other guy's insurance company right away.

Glad to hear your 8 protected you both from serious harm. I'm more and more impressed with the safety features of this car!

Finding out today about my Rx8

Thanks for the help and concern guys. I am expecting a call from my insurance adjuster today...he will give me the news good or bad. Also to answer the previous post, my car is/was Titanium Grey. I'm back at work relatively in once piece as is my girlfriend. We are seeing a doctor/therapist almost every day. I'm expecting a call any day from this dope's insurance company wanting to settle...On a positive note he's 100% at fault(big surprise running the red with a dozen witnesses) The Police officer has him on tape as well admitting fault. I am not going to sue as many friends have suggested, but I do expect to be compensated for the missed time from work as well as my medical bills. I will keep you guys updated...also if my car is a loss I'll be right back at the dealership to buy another 8! This car is amazing and saved us that night-Jeff

Good luck on your estimate. Of all the post I've read on this site about accidents, and destruction to the 8, I have not herd anyone say they were hurt. Front end, T-bones, rear ends and angle shots but everyone seems to be OK. Best wishes to you and your girlfriend. I'm sure you will be rubbing your neck for a few weeks.

This car seems to hold up well even when hit by a truck.

Sorry to hear. I know you don't want to sue frivolously, but to collect the compensation you say you are expecting you might have to. Play it nice and see how his insurance company reacts, then if they refuse you should sue them.

Glad you are all OK.

Good to hear you and your gf are ok, bad for your 8. When there's damage to the actual frame of the car it's usually really bad news. I'd rather just get a new car rather then drive one with the frame re-stretched back into shape (if it's even worth doing). If you and your gf already haven't done it, keep a journal of your everyday activities and how much harder it is for you two to perform them because of the pain inflicted by the accident. This is a handy tool for you to help get the most money out of the other guy's insurance company. Since it's the other guy's fault 100%, his insurance company may not put up much of a fight. Feel better soon!
