A standard truck scale should be linear even at the lower weights (relative to a fully loaded truck's 72,000 pounds). The sensor is a pressure transducer that's actually interpreting the diameter of a strain-gauge. As the diameter of the reference wire decreases, the resistance along that circuit increases. The change in conductivity is read and converted to weight. It should be linear. The question that I can't address is how sensistive the transducer is. I should think that most would read in at least 1/1000th of the full scale with no problem. That would be 100 pound increments. Given that 100 pounds plus or minus could make a difference when weighing to determine freight charges (sizing a load), it wouldn't surprise me if the things were (are) more finely tuned than +/- 100 pounds....

anyway, I highly doubt there is a 125 difference, probably more like 50-60 at most. Unless you have smaller wheels.
Mine did not have the Nav, I bet the nav stuff weighs 10-12 lbs.

So... would mine weigh the lighest? Red Base 6-spd, no TCS, no DSC, no moonroof, no Nav, cloth seats, no HID, no body kit, etc. :p
But I do have a spoiler. Does anyone notice that the trunk door is heavy for its size? Kinda weirded me out the first time I opened an 8's trunk door. Are the retainers causing that virtual weight there?
Oh and, does anyone have an idea how heavy the hood is? I know that replacing a CF hood doesn't really affect much to the car's performance in daily-driving conditions.

the hood, rear doors and rear hatch are aluminum. I dont see very much weight reduction being possible with the rx-8...lighter wheels, lighter battery...thats about it without gutting the interior (yuk).

I as wondering though... It seems the stock wheels on the 8 are kinda heavy. I noted some really light units at Tire.com. Looks like I can save about 13lbs per wheel. Next, the flywheel can be replaced with a lighter unit, saving approximately 5lbs.
Total savings would be about 57lbs and should help handling and acceleration I would think.

the stock 18's are not that heavy including the tires something like 23-25lbs.. not to shabby... but canzoomer has a nice set of 17's that I bet shave a 1/4 sec off the 1/4 mile...

Volk Racing forged wheels in 18" x 7 are 17 lbs each.
OZ Chrono Evolution are 18.5 lbs each
SSR Competition (forged lightweight) are 15 lbs each, and are the lightest I could find..

when i raced my 8 in englishtown Nj
I weighed my car in at 3082 pounds with a full tank of gas, me in it, and a gt fully loaded with navi with out the appearance package

The weight saving we are talking about here is un-sprung weight. in terms of the responsiveness of the shcoks and suspension for handling, it could be quite significant.
In TRACK times.
On the street the difference would probably be barely noticeable at best.
In terms of acceleration the difference is tiny.
However, having said that, if I were to decide to buy new wheels for my RX-8 I would buy 17's.
Adding the weight as the smallest factor, the lowering of the drive ratio as the biggest, and the savings in cost as the middle factor,I think that 17's are a smarter choice.
Maybe they would not look as "cool" but they would certainly improve the performance.
And lowering the car the 1/2" this results in also does good things for handling..

Hmmm...I had expected mine to weigh more as well, but when I saw another at the same weight I figured it must be true...I've since had my spare tire kit installed (but even then its shipping weight including packaging was only 43 lbs (kit w/ the tire included). Maybe gravity works differently out west? I'm actually headed to Maryland tomorrow. Maybe I'll see what it reads when I get there.

I weighted my RX8 today...MT, GT no nav gear, full fuel, spare tire, but nothing else in the trunk or in the car.
Measured car weight on all four tires at the same time using four individual scales, one under each tire. Total weight came to right at 2960 pounds. Interestingly enough the weight on each tire came in at 740 pounds. Talk about balanced weight distribution!
Scales were recently calibrated to plus or minus 1%.

Yeah, I heard the navigation system weighs something like 400 lbs - the screen the DVD the wiring harness, the great big antenna. :D
