So I've been enjoying my '07 RX-8 for the past few months, after getting a pretty good deal on it, but I'm now realizing that it's no longer practical for my purposes. That makes me sad. I'm moving to Brooklyn in August and driving a manual car with this sort of gas mileage in NYC traffic is pretty bad. I'm averaging about 15 miles to a gallon, plus having to deal with a stick shift in bumper-to-bumper traffic and a traffic light after every 5 steps, it's definitely a pain.

It's so much freaking fun on my New Jersey roads though. I love this car, but I think it's time for a Mazda3 hatch. I only put 4000 miles on it too.

I agree, a manual transmission in an overpopulated area like NYC is hell. You're much better off with an auto in that scenario. Good luck with the Mazda3....after the RX8, it is going to seem unbelievably boring to drive.

Damn, dter, that's a shame, you didn't just get a pretty good deal, it was pretty much the best deal ever IIRC. At least that will help with the depreciation, especially if you find a used 3 rather than a new one. Good luck!

Where in Brooklyn are you moving? 15 MPG isn't too bad for NYC driving. We average 11-12 MPG in our Infiniti with grandma driving (tune up and tires properly inflated also).

You're better off taking the MTA as a daily anyways.

I get 10-13 mpg.. I.. I sometimes don't eat because I waste my money on feeding my 8.. It's my baby..

^Yes, is there any reason you can't take mass transit to work? I bike commute and save the car for weekends, using it just to go for country drives and to visit friends in the 'burbs. With 90% of my driving on Saturday and Sunday mornings, I'm rarely caught in city traffic. In fact, when I drive Manhattan streets are often very quiet.

keep the car because you will get crushed on trade in value......i just traded mine and saw quite a few 8's sitting idle just waiting.....right now with the soft resale, the gas prices and the economy the way it is i wouldnt trade if i only had the car one year.....the first year is also the biggest los on any car

Yeah, I'll probably be taking the MTA most of the time since I have to commute to Upper West Side. 15mpg of premium fuel is pretty intense when you're a grad (law) student though, otherwise I'd keep it for weekend trips.

The 3 should be more practical if I want to go camping anyway. I'm waiting for a callback from one of the local dealers with a trade-in quote; as robrecht said, I got a great deal on this car, so I shouldn't lose THAT much.

Brighton Beach? Near Sheepshead Bay?

You should be able to find plenty of MTA there. The B and Q line runs on Brighton/Sheepshead. Both lines are 2-3 stops from the Coney Island station which lets you transfer to the N, F, D, and Q. The Manhattan bound B goes straight to the Upper West Side along Central Park.

Most of the time I prefer taking the MTA because it is quicker (BQE traffic at almost all times) and much cheaper. I'm sure you can figure something out .

First, consider how much you lose from trading in. Then consider how much you actually spend for a new car!

That and insurance. Sometimes a new car will cost you more. Too many people fall into the trap of buying a new more efficient car, when you need to drive that new car for like 7+ years before you finally regain your losses.

I'd go for a cooper s if I was in NYC. Auto isn't too bad and it isn't too slow, also gets good mpg and is nimble.

Like those who have mentioned, MTA is the way to go. $4/day (which includes 2 free transfers for every $2) * 5 (assuming you work 5 days a week) = $20. I don't see that's not a bargain vs driving a car everyday. And if you commute more than $20/week, you can buy unlimited rides for a month ($80? I think or something like that).

But the choice is up to you of course. Are you going to park your car in garages? That's another big chunk there.

I'll probably move to Ocean Parkway, I have a lot of friends in the area, and the Q is right there. It'd be nice to be by a B stop though, express is fun, so I'm half-considering Kings Highway.

Oh, I'll definitely use MTA. There's no way I'll be driving into the city on a daily basis. To get around Brooklyn, and to take weekend trips, however, I'll need a car. I might just keep this one depending on what kind of prices I see being offered, but it really is not that practical and I think it'll kill me in the winter. :P
