i hit a retread on the way to work...
so... this is my first post. Yaay for introductions.
On the way to work this morning there was a retread in the road folded in half, and i had no option but to hit it, and it in return made my car ugly faster than an angry girlfriend with a baseball bat. The retread knocked my nose into the air what felt like a foot, but adrenalin and whatnot, it was probably more like a couple of inches, and did some cosmetic damage to my fascia. Does anybody have any guess how much this might cost me?
Edit: also, sorry for the photo quality. my phone has a notoriously terrible whitebalance.

I zoom therefore I am.
I think you're misremembering. this wasnt sitting in the road.. it had just come off a truck and was moving when you hit it. at least that's what i'm sure you should tell your insurance company.

Like said, you *may* be able to claim that on insurance, of course if you have full coverage. I used to feel sorry for truckers on the side of the road when one of their re-treads blew, but I don't anymore since I found out that most truckers run their re-treads way beyond what they should be ran. They could literally kill someone if someone is in the wrong spot when one of them explodes.

dont feel bad, I bought my 8, drove it home, wife is in the drive way and first words out of her mouth are "The bumper is broken"
bumper had a crack they wasn't really visible unless you were standing in front of the car about 15+ feet away from it. Luckly dealership fixed it for free.

On the lemons to lemonaid side you're sure to get some insurance coverage so an opportune time to got to a Mazdaspeed et al front end.
Of course the retread hit you as you tried to avoid.
I would expect insurance companies are getting allot of these claims these days and that will ultimately cause the pendulum to swing the other way... or at least we can hope so.

I hit one a month or so before I traded in the 8. It was lying in the road and the vehicle in front of me kicked it up. Surprisingly I only suffered a minor 3 inch scratch, which wasn't very noticeable. That **** sucks though. Hope you have a low deductible.

My car looks worse than that, and I got rear ended. It popped the lower part of the appearance package off, I didn't notice and I ran it over and it tore it all out. You can buy just the lower peice for about $500 from mazda and the plastic air dam piece and stuff is $170 IIRC. More if you need to two tire pieces if they get messed up frfom rubbing. Then you have to get the bumper painted. That's a few hundred there. I got insurance doing mine. If I were you though, you could look on ebay for a whole bumper, sometimes you can score one, or look into a mazdaspeed front. The cost is similar.

It'll be pretty pricey. I recently redid my stock bumper but brought my own bumper. If it came new, it would be unpainted and so it'd have to be painted and installed.
For a new rear, painted to match and installed would have been around $600. So I'd say the front bumper would be about the same.

Happened to me about 3 weeks after I got my car.
They had to replace my splash guard which was 3 main pieces and the front lower black lip thingy.
$298....
My damage was no where near what you have.

As far as insurance goes, it looks like I'm beat there. I was supposed to get my own plan for the RX8 as soon as i could, and i hadn't done it yet... I'm still on my dads car insurance, and he (understandably) doesn't want to deal with the rate increase. The body shop near by quoted me 1654.17
- Front bumper cover
- front retainer
- front spoiler
- left fog lamp assembly
- left fender liner
- under cover
Plus side: My VIN number turned up that i have a car alarm and remote entry. I'd already guessed that because the lights would flash when i locked the doors and closed them, and my passenger door has no external lock... but its still cool. I'll just need to either get carmax to give me the fob under warranty (? maybe) or buy a new fob.
Other, and more important plus side: My oil cooler / AC condenser both look fine.
