Who tampered with mileage? Dealer or person that had it before?

They probably swapped gauge clusters. Weird, and that was in 1996 when I was stationed there in the Navy. All of us young guys got a good talking to about buying cars from the small used car dealerships in Norfolk.

this sorta thing happened with my and my first car... the guy I purchased my 2001 Audi TT from had stuck a wad of electrical tape behind the cluster to block the engine light so it wouldnt shine throught the cluster. drove it for a month with the engine light flashing!

I wouldn't do that. The S2s are a nightmare.

I can appreciate that you just went through hell doing an oil change, but that doesn't mean everyone will lol
OP, shitty that there are people out there that do this to hard working people. Hard to trust anyone these days...

I was looking at buying a truck one time. After closely looking at the interior I saw light flash off something that looked metalic. I reached inside a cubby to find a switch that was hooked upto the odometer. This truck was on a lot. But the previous owner had installed a cut off switch linked to the odometer and gauge cluster. They had no idea how many miles were on the vehicle, but it only read about 20,000. He had been turning off the speedo/odometer and not moving the mileage.

You need specislized equipment to do this...it's not as easy as it looks....definitely not as easy as unplugging it

Wasn't a "mistake" for sure

Wouldn't carfax prove some of these things? You didn't look at the carfax before purchasing?

Not if it has never been in for service.

Also I didn't think just swapping the clusters would change anything...esp with the digital read out ones. Didn't think the mileage was stored in the cluster?

I thought mileage was reported when the car changed hands and needed to be titled again, among other ways. I guess if it was a single owner that part would not matter, but most cars are generally not owned by one person for the 100k+ that this car has.

It doesn't save the amount miles are on the gauge cluster, it does on the car's computer.

You know you want an LS1 powered RX8.
You know you want to the very first person to install the Hinson kit, take lots of pictures, and note every little snag you run into... ahem... for posterity.

I may be willing to read that thread. Maybe.

^ sounds good. Are they going to refund you any on the purchase price of the car? I would think they would to avoid litigation.

Oh yeah? You sound so certain.

Because I have seen clusters with shown mileage so explain that. If they swapped ECU's it would have had to be reprogrammed by the dealer because the security system is integrated.
