I am going drag racing tomorrow

I am looking for some tips.

What rpm do I launch at and what PSI should my tires be?

Do I dump the clutch or feather it?

I understand this is not a drag racing type car so not many of you have lots of experience with this.

I will have to feel it out for myself while I am there I guess.

I think it's great seeing some nice RX8's finally getting out and trying it. The more you post about your experiences, the more folks will use those experiences to improve their setups and drive their cars faster.

"Feel it out" is a good thought. Don't go out there and launch hard the first time youre up to bat. Take off like you were on the street... like you were showing off how fast your car is to your girlfriend. Build up from there. Think about it... if you've never driven down a curvy road, do you take it at 10/10ths? No. You have some fun with it, but youre not going to blast down it not knowing what the conditions are.

Too many people get so amped when they see that tree in front of them that they lose their minds, and launch at some ridiculous RPM, hop like crazy, look foolish, and come up with a worse time than if they had just launched normally.

Nobody here is going to be able to tell you exactly how to launch. It will vary from track to track, and each track will change by track prep, temperature and weather conditions, etc. Talk to somebody that has some experience at the track with a car similar to yours (perhaps an RX7 or an S2K) and see what they can recommend.

Not with you driving it... j/k

So, when he comes back with a time, can't criticize unless you have a slip that beats him.

I just got back from the track. I ran my car 3 times and gave up.

The best I could get was 14.2 @ 97mph. My boost controller was set to 8psi.

I think there might be something wrong with my tune. Adrian1 had similar mods as me and was running 13.1 @ 107mph. The big difference is he was running the Mazsport Interceptor-X and I am using the Cobb AccessPort.

60ft - 1.948
330ft - 6.251
1/8th - 9.140

E.T. - 14.239
MPH - 97.969

Other than being a little bummed about the time, did you have fun?

Adrian had quite a bit of experience at the track, was running drag radials, and spent a lot of time perfecting his setup.

What was your MPH at the 1/8?

That's a good 60ft on street tires, first time out!!

Also, was 97.7mph your highest trap on your runs? Trap anything higher?

Forget about your ET the first time you go out... you can get some much better information out of the trapspeed at the 1/8th and the 1/4... help see how much power your car is making.

What does your car do on the dyno at 8psi? Have any charts?

All three runs I was getting 97mph trap speeds.

I could care less about the actual times but trap speeds don't lie.

My 1/8 was 79.041 mph.

I haven’t dynoed my car yet.

mysql said it's probably the Mazsport ignition solution causing the problems.

I will be reinstalling my OEM coils asap.

If you're trapping 79mph in the 1/8, you should be right at a 100 mph... you're obviously not making much power on the big end.

From the sounds of it, you wouldn't have been happy with 100mph either.

I hope you can find what's up. What were your goals? 105mph+?

I had no goals.

Just curious to see what my trap speeds were.

They are bad enough to know there is a serious problem somewhere so it was worth going to find that out.

Now I'm intrigued by this Cobb AP / Mazsport ignition issue...
What's happening? Can you feel it breaking up in the higher RPMs?

The power is VERY smooth so that is why I am confused aswell.

Jeff added the proper dwell settings to my map so everything should be optimal.

Hey, Twink was messing with Cobb's 0-60 and 1/4 mile measurments. Have you tried that out? What was it telling you compared to what you ran?

this makes me wonder. over 7 runs with the mazsport ignition my trap speed was consistently 2mph slower.

Interesting.

Unless we have a before/after dyno run with and without the ignition solution, we just wont know for sure if it's causing the problem.

I stopped counting.

I would rather stick my head in the sand because gas prices here are insane!

I pay $5.67 CAD ($5.73 USD) per gallon for 94 octane.

They have crappy gas so you will need a safe tune.
