It happened in August 2003 - when Mazda concluded that the RX-8 was not making the up-to-that-point advertised 247 hp, they revised the hp rating down to 238. For people who had taken delivery up to that point (actually, wasn't it for people who had bought and took delivery before Sept 10 or somewhere around there?), Mazda offered those owners 2 options:
- Mazda would buy back the RX-8 for your purchase price (less a small mileage deduction, IIRC); or
- Mazda would give you a $500 gift card AND free maintenance during the warranty period. (In Canada, we got a check for $500 instead of the gift card) I'm still enjoying free oil changes and scheduled service! Got 5 months to go...

Not a rebate - a search for "buy back" or "free maintenance" would have likely found those old threads.

Yep, 2 yrs of ownership and the dealership have yet received a dime from me. It will be a sad day when my warranty runs out.

 

I purchased my 8 in August 2003, and I had to sign a form stating that I was aware that the RX8 did not have the prior stated 247 hp. They were already using the 238 hp rating at the time.
