The mazda authorised dealer here, only uses the standard mazda synthetic 5w 30
However the guy who i get my oil from said that thEy had talked to a number of Jap tuners and they use syn 10 w30 for everyday and lighter stuff eg 5w 40 for track (or i guess very cold)
So it seems nobody really cares for mineral or semi-synthetic

The oil story is funny. Mazda has "reengineered" the dipstick twice, changing the level where it says "full" and "empty". In actual fact, the renesis was supposed to have a "dry sump" but I guess that was judged too expensive. It got an oil pan that carries a LOT of oil. Even when the dipstick indicates you should add oil, you have at least 1 1/2 quarts more than you really need (unless you're on the track, of course, due to cornering forces displacing it). More oil is always better, as it dilutes less, cools better, and distributes the acids etc. through more oil making them less concentrated.
Just don't overfill it - overfill means more oil than the volume of the container (oil pan and cavity above) can hold. Bad things happen when you do this as oil doesn't compress, and will force its' way out wherever it can - even through plastic parts and gaskets - leaving holes behind.

I used a quart every 3000 miles until the car was serviced at 18k miles. Now uses about 1 quart every 800 to 900 miles. Dealer won't even look at it. Says it's normal.
