the lightning yellow looks really good on the 8, best shade of yellow ever seen. i have a red which is nice but its really common... by contrast, i think its the most common rx8 color.

I would argue that silver is the most common color, simply because silver is the most popular car color, regardless of make or model. I didn't believe this statistic until I started keeping track of car colors one day on a busy road as I drove- silver (in all it's shades) by far really did outnumber all other colors. But as far as actually spotting 8's, I'd have to say that gray is the most common color- at least around here.

Hopefully, they'll give you a number. Ask them about the total number of 2004 RX8s sold in the US for starters. That could at least narrow it down if they can't give you an answer. I've seen several yellow RX8s, and when I bought mine they had three in the lot at that time. I'd imagine since it's one year, the amount is very small compared to the 63,000+ total RX8s sold to date, but the fact is 04 was by far the biggest production year for the RX8, and they were well overstocked, so the amount of yellow rx8s is definitely in the thousands without question.

How much you see a car is definitely not a basis for how many exist. You have cars for sale, cars driven seasonally and sparingly, ect ect, and some hardly driven at all. The RX8 is not a daily driver for everyone, and is a second car for many, so there's lots that sit in a garage, and being driven short distances, and not to work. I'd imagine the yellow is the color least driven daily year round for 04 overall, since it has fun second car written all over it. That right there will prevent you from seeing many.

yes i agree silver is the MOST common color if u include all cars.
but i also see black is fast becomming very common, i see lots of black every where from sports cars to econocars, to suvs...coz every one wants to be a knight rider...

Once upon a time back in early 2005 I had what I deemed the only yeller 8 in Northeast Ohio. My exclusivity has been invaded upon in recent months as I have seen another driving I-480 in the Western Cleveland suburbs. Then to my utter dismay another turned up at a dealership in Lorain county, and they had the gall to advertise it! Damn them!!!!

2004 Yeller 8; everything, short of the nav package; no mods; just a huge grin.

Curious myself about LY production. Someone actually just asked me that question last light at a 4th of July party seeing as how they never see any other than mine.

When I ordered back in Aug. '03, the dealership mentioned that only 7 of the first 100 cars (or so) were going to be yellow. I would assume that number would be different at each dealership but it may give us an idea of rough numbers at this point. There are three other than mine that I've seen in Columbus.

I would have to say though that nordic green would have to be just as rare.

I've seen alot of yellows around my area, and Ive seend a number of nordic greens but I have yet to see another Phantom other than mine.

When I went to pre-order my 8 in May of '03, I was shown the dealer's order list to see if there was something already ordered that I would want assigned to me to help speed up the process of getting the car instead of creating an all new order. About 3/4s of the dealership ordered cars were lightning yellow. They knew that it was a limited run color, and most of the advertising materials at that time were in lightning yellow.

However, by the time the cars came through to the dealership, most of those yellows had been converted into other colors by customers who took over the orders and who didn't want yellow. Besides my car, I only saw three yellows come through my dealer's lot. It was a slow seller for them, and all later orders were in more popular colors like red, silver and black.

In my area now, there is only one other yellow 8 out of potentially ten that I see fairly regularly. I see yellow more often than Nordic Green, of which I have seen only one in the last three years.

Good observation, WF. In fact the most popular car colors across the board are silver, white, and black, in that order. Those three colors make up 50% of all cars sold in the world. There is some uncertainty as to the effect fleet sales have on those numbers (rental cars, constabulatory, corporate, government, etc.)

If you go the Mazda corporate Website, they list monthly car sales numbers by type. I believe the numbers are worldwide sales, but they might be North American sales only, can't recall right now. Unfortunately they don't break down the numbers by color. But note the small numbers of RX-8's compared to other models.

there's 3 other yellow eights in my town, all of them are within 10 miles of me. I've seen more yellows than any other color here. The next is silver, blue..

One day I was driving home on the freeway and on the service road next to the freeway I saw what looked like my reflection... I looked over and realized there was a Yellow '8 on the service road, the dude was speeding to keep up with me (my speed limit was 65, his was 45). When he finally got my attention, we gave each other the thumbs up. He had the appearance package and custom wheels. Good looking car.

Anyhow, I rarely see yellows on the road, and it seems even more rare when I'm driving my yellow that I come across another. I like it that way

BTW, I'd also love to know how many were made, I'm sure the number's not that high.

The reality was they where made from APR-03 until NOV-04 as my sources pointed out. Meaning any 03 + 04 model could be optioned with yellow



Since the US guy get all ***** on their models. An APR-03 model is called an 04. This must make an APR-04 model into an 05. So by US logic they where made for the 04+05 models.

Who said 1+1 wasn't 3..............
