Well, I just got the M flash today when I took my 8 into the dealer for a touchup on the hood. Now I've always heard of the 8 needing an M flash (build date for mine was 1/04) and so I told my Dad when he went to get the hood fixed to see if they did the M flash. I came back from school today and he told me that they updated to the M flash. What specifically did the M flash do?

supercar, probably not. But definitely a super car. Part of it has to do with how far cars have come performance-wise. If this were 1987, these would be supercar numbers. For most people who don't drive a lot of different cars, the leaps in performance over the past few years has been really striking. Even an accord v6 right now would feel really fast to someone who came out of an accord from say, 1990.
As for milage -- I just can't bring myself to try. In the city, shifting regularly at 5-6 k, letting her rev, hitting the beeper at least once per day...I seem to be able to reliably get right around 200 miles before the light comes on. I suppose I could get that up to 18-19 city and have seen 20+ on the highway (even than I couldn't bring myslef to drive below 75-80)...but why would I do that? I bought this thing to drive and enjoy it, and dammit, that's what I'm going to do. If that means I get 30-40 miles less per tank, I'm really more than fine with that. Am I the only one?

Does the M flash cure all of the poor mileage that people used to get with their 8s?
I'm buying a very early production (5/2003) but it has had the M flash done.
Should I be ok on mileage once the car is broken in?

Edmunds.com called it a supercar too:
It's these reverse-opening rear doors that differentiate the RX-8 from other sports cars (as much or more than the rotary engine under its hood). The idea of a "four-door sports car" has been bandied about for decades, but Mazda's efforts are likely to set a new benchmark in this area. The key is the near seamless integration of these rear doors into an otherwise lithe and lean vehicle. With the exception of its slightly elongated wheelbase and subtly truncated rear window angle, there is little indication that the RX-8 is anything other than a dedicated supercar.Casual observers will likely notice neither characteristic and simply wonder how fast this sexy, low-slung machine is.
