All the crap and sediment that gets pumped into the tank will settle to the bottom of the tank somewhat, over time. Also any water in the tank, and there will always be a little tiny bit of water in any fuel tank, will also be at the very bottom, under all the fuel. The intake for the fuel pump is not at the very bottom of the tank, its spaced a little over the bottom, maby 1/8-1/4 the reason for this is so that it helps keep the pump up above all the crud and water in the tank. Also there is a sock on the pump, to filter out stuff, and keep it from going thru the pump or into the fuel lines, there is also a fuel filter. If you always fill up with gas from quality stations, theres not too much to worry about as far as your car sucking up the crap at the bottom, although it can happen...i wouldnt loose sleep over it. Also the fuel pump in your car is running, all the time! Even if the motor is not running, anytime the car is on (ie sitting with the engine off, listening to the radio or whatever, or of course when your driving around, the pump is on and running, pulling in fuel and keeping it at pressure......its just a little electric pump and it gets hot....having a lot of gas in the tank helps the pump stay cool......there is more volume of fuel for it to displace its heat.....as the fuel lvl gets lower, the pump will run hotter.....running out of gas, or running really low from time to time wont matter much....but doing it often or all the time....you will cut life off the fuel pump motor....and even though the pump itself might not cost that much, having the service done (if you can/wont do it yourself) can make the total price quite high.....the thing is, im not talking about running low on gas making your pump die in a year.....but it might only last 4-5 years, vs running the life of the car.
