Hood Popped up at 60MPH

While driving along a backroad, I heard a pop and a shift in the hood. I immediately slowed down and pulled over. The safety latch for the hood held firm, but something cause the primary latch to release the hood. Hooray for the safety! For now, I'll chalk it up to a fluke (perhaps it really didn't latch when I checked the oil. I will be keeping an eye on it.

And now for the classic question...

Has anyone else experienced this?

I checked my oil once few months ago, popped the hood closed, and once i got on the tollway, going about 70 i saw the hood pop up a bit...pulled over and was opened, except for the safety latch. Closed it, and never had a problem since then.

Haven't experienced it, but did you maybe inadvertently hit the hood release button while you were driving?

Reminds me of that scene in Tommy Boy when their hood pops up while driving down the highway :D

Can't say it has ever happened (in this car, at least). But, I'm glad the safety held. My vote would be for the "didn't completely latch after oil check" theory.

you sure you didn't hit the button by accident...once i was driving my sister's car and I hit the button to open the hood and nothing happened...and a few days later the guy in the toll booth let me know that the hood was open, it kinda had a delayed reaction

My hood flutters quite a bit while at highway speed.

it happened on my friends S-10. He says it just popped up for no reason. ( I think he didn't close it all the way) Jacked the hood up and the hinges. Amazingly it didn't smash his windshield. I also knew a guy with a Celica that was using a CF hood w/o pins and the hood flew up and smashed his window in. Nuts

nothing like that here with the 8

The S-10 guy pulled over safely somehow and the Celica guy was just getting on the freeway. He pulled over fine too- that has to be some scary ****. Imagine at night.....

They made me practice for that scenario on the driver's ed simulator many moons ago.
Never had it happen and my hood never shakes at high speeds.
Kudo's for safety latch and brown boxers!
