hissing?

not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but i notice that when i hit the gas, i hear a slight hiss type of noise that seems to come from the passenger air bag direction. obviously it's not coming from the passenger side air bag itself, but that general direction of the car. when i let go of the gas, the noise goes silent.

has anyone else noticed this? if so, is this normal? it sounds like it could just be the sound of the air intake or something, but it just caught my attention and i'm hoping nothing is wrong under the hood.

btw, my car had 15 miles when i drove it off the lot. that's kinda high isn't it? hope no one had too much fun in my car before delivery.

soo many things could be doing this. Air Intake, bad seal around window/door, vacuum lines to the AC system.

If it's bugging you take it to the dealer.

I agree. As long as the fire's out, there's no cause for concern.

I noticed a slightly different sound seeming like it was coming from the passenger side - more of a grinding sound. I'm a little concerned about it and thinking of taking it to the dealer, but if they said it was normal, how the hell would they know??? They've never heard one before!

Isn't that the dealers normal answer to almost every problem "It's normal"?

Anyone ever find anything out about the hissing sound? I have 1700 miles on mine and just this afternoon started hearing a hissing sound. It gets louder as I rev the engine regardless of whether the car is in motion or sitting still.

My wife hasn't made any comment to me if we have a hissing noise with our car, but that's not to say you don't have a problem.

Your problem is obviously different than rtryboi. His is coming from the passenger side airbag area. Your hiss comes from when you are reving the engine.

Have you tried to isolate the problem by lifting the hood to see if its' coming from the engine compartment or somewhere else on the car? Until you do that, it may be hard to answer what is wrong.

First thing I would do is check the engine compartment. Maybe radiator leaking or something, but who knows until you look deeper and try to isolate the noise.

Good luck and I hope you find your problem soon.

I have the same sound, and also a sort of gravelly noise when shifting through the gears after the car is really warmed up. I let a friend of mine give it a rather spirited test drive during lunch today (he autocrosses his WRX, and was really impressed with the 8, BTW), and the best we could conclude is that there might be 2 different sounds - one from the intake and also possibly some synchro noise. As far as the synchros go, I've heard the exact same sound in F-series Ford trucks, so maybe part of the powertrain is Ford's? Also, we both agreed that if some people are feeling a power loss above 6250RPM, they must be driving a different car. Mine pulls hard to redline.
