Does driving in 2nd gear around 6k rpms reduce the lifetime of the engine.

 

You guys gotta see my new RX-8! I've been here since 2004 and finally got one. It's an 07 with one of the new colors. It's called invisible clearcoat! Kinda hard to see in bright sunlight, but it get's much better gas mileage than all of yours. And I'll bet I have the lowest payment as well. I like to ride around in it on weekends with my pet blue zebra.

LOL... Arbitrary discriptions was what I was going for. Still, easy to remember me as the guy with the convertable 8.

 

The 8 has a rev limiter so I don't think you can really over rev the engine. The renesis can handle the high rpms, its the tranny that can't from what I've read. I think the only damage from high rev's will come if you downshift without revmatching.

 

That will really only affect the clutch.

After ciphering through this thread, i do find some of it to be useful. I've never head a straight up-front answer about higher revs hurting the engine or not. Many have said that it takes to them a lot better than a piston engine, but nothing solid.

Thanx for the reassurance Zoom44. Although it would use more gas, its nice to know that you can sit there with that power on tap without hurting the engine.

Quick hijack...what is the lowest RPMS that you should try and keep the renesis above? Is it feeling bogged at about 2K? I've searched this a lil, but figured that since this "entertaining" thread it already rolling, why not throw it in now?

High revs are good so long as they're matched as has already been said.

9.8 m/s/s: Acceleration due to gravity (or caused by gravity) near Earth's surface, not acceleration *of* gravity. OK, too ****, nm.

Is it bad to hit the rev limiter 2,4 times per day?
Is this practice cleaning the carbon deposits inside the engine?
(I never have done this...)

 

You should be shifting b4 the rev limiter IMHO. I think 8K and above would clean the deposits.

 

Going around at 6K and above in the city is going to eat up your gas.

 

I concur with the 2.5k RPMs is the minimum a person should cruise at. Lower than that can lug the motor and lugging it doesn't make anything happy.

zeblien I must say you ride the tightwire when asking for help. Being cocky normally gets a person ignored or laughed at here if you haven't noticed.

 

yea, i figured that a little above the 2 mark woulda been almost too low.

and abbid was right...the shift points are almost outragoues. Half of them almost drop you below 2!

Surely I cannot the only person here who knows the difference between acceleration and velocity. 9.8m/s/s is not and cannot be the top speed of anything, since it is not a speed.

 

A person would have to be in a fighter jet to get that kind of G-force or a simulated machine that spins around real fast...

That was noticed by me also. Just didn't think I needed to point it out.

 

^^Ah yes, glossed over that one. I was too wrapped up in the gravity acclerating business. The actual sig makes more sense: "0-60 @ 9.8 m/s/s when falling." Of course we'd all be more impressed with a time.

Edit: I mean time to 60 mph given that acceleration.
