Ok guys i need to know if this has ever happend to you. My friend couldn't get his rx8 out to play today because his damn car won't go in reverse. I tryed and its friggin impossible. We can go through all the other gears but it just won't go into reverse. We tryed a few things but could not manage to get it in. He is not new to the car at all and i don't think this has ever happend. Is it because of the cold weather? has this ever happend to anyone? any suggestions? will this have to be brought into the dealer?

 

You need to press the shifter down and make like your putting it into 6th.

 

please elaborate on "won't go into reverse." does it go into gear but nothing happens or is reverse gear obstructed and inaccessible?

to get into reverse in the 8:
PUSH DOWN on the gearbox first, move it all the way to the right, and then pull it towards you.

otherwise, u r just shifting into 6th gear...

 

hey, its my rx8, i know how to get it into reverse but now, it just wont get in there its like theres something blocking it i cant get it into the reverse gear

 

this sometimes happens to my 8 you push it down move it to the right and pull back and you let off the gas and it sounds almost like a whirrrr sound what happens is its not fully engaging. pull it out rev a little and wait for the revs to settle and sit a minute. Push it down firmly again push it to the right and pull back a lil harder than normal.

 

Do you have a short shifter? At least in some other cars a bad short shifter install will prevent you from getting in some gears.

 

sounds like something is stuck then... very unusual.

i've been driving stick all my life- on my 4th stick shift car. and, anytime i can't get into reverse while fully stopped, usually shifting into 1st gear first and then trying again unlocks it.

time to break out the AAA card or call the dealer i guess...

Yeah sometimes mine doesn't go in either. Since reverse technically isn't a "real" gear, it can be tricky every once in a while. Just start to back up like normal while gently pulling the stick into place. Sometimes it gets in a weird position and needs the wheels to roll a little before it pops fully into gear.

 

Reverse is a straight cut gear, not helical. That's why it whines so much when you drive in it. It's also hard to shift of the gear is in the wrong position.

Put the car in first, pull forward slighty, stop, and then shift into reverse. It will change the gear postion. If that doesn't work, then call the dealer.

 

I slowly let out the clutch and crunch it into gear. Heck if you were a real freind, you would drive over and push it backwards for him.

 

man yea fjd has a shortshifter, all rx8's don't have that short shifter stock? it is seriosly one of the nicest shifters i have ever used. i hope this isn't too big of a problem cuz i want to get a chance to rally with the 8 again before it snows again, this rx8 is my cars best friend

 

Yup yup thats what I still do with my 240SX. Locks up every night when parked. Put it first drive it ever so slightly forward in first and then its ready to engage reverse.

Damn thing happens to me everday and I just got my clutch chaged a year ago.

Oh well........Let us know if that works on ur 8.

 

30-80 as soon as i find reverse haha and tints after that

If none of our suggestions work, then get the car to a dealer and them take care of it. Thats what a warranty is for.

 

Yea the car is in an ally garage and it is hard to control the car, we basically pushed it out of the garage but then the car got really hard to push so we gave up and decided to smoke a blunt and get the damn car out tomarrow cuz it was raining
