Help: Ignition & Steering column locked
Hey, so this afternoon i was looking at the clear corners DIY and it said to turn your wheel the oppostie way of the side of the corner u were doing for more space. I had the key in the ignition but the car was not turned on. I turned the wheel 180 degrees and the steering wheel locked. I thought to myself...ah i must need to have power steering on. attempting to turn the car on i found out that the key would not turn clockwise or counterclockwise. Immediately i looked at the owners manual and found out that the "Security Indicator Light" was flashing. it also said, "If the eengine doesnt start with the correct ignition key, and the security indicator light keeps illuminating or flashing, the system may have a malfunction. Consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer." I called my mazda dealer up and the guy didnt know, im waiting for his call back after he's talked to a tech guy. So again...turn wheel with ignition key in...the steering wheel and ignition is locked due to the security system. How can i turn it off and first straighten the wheel and start driving again.

with the key in the ignition, press the key in, and then tug hard on the wheel in whichever direction you can get it to move Moving it just a tad will take pressure off the ignition lock pins and free everything up.

If there is no security light, the wheel lock is probably engaged. Turn the wheel the same direction you did to lock it and turn the key to the on position. Lots of cars have steering locks, but ive noticed the 8 is a little harder to turn to unlock than any other car ive owned.

Like they said.
Nannyism as it's best -- we don't want anyone starting their car with the wheel cocked a certain way of moved when engine off. Seems that in the RX-8 this ties into the overall ignition lock which engages when key not sensed.
