You must not spend much time here. In general, the posters in this forum are unbelievable self-loathers. The bitching never stops. This is a refreshing change.

 

Most of it you would say is highway mileage with mixed city. Probably 60 highway/40 city. That is with a lot of redlining too. However, after putting in some fuel injector cleaner I have noticed a decline in mileage as well as an increase in performance

Every rotary is different. Some people get 11 mpg and trade in their 8 for a newer one and get 19 withthe same driving style. Maybe I was just one of the lucky ones.

 

i love mine more evry mornin i walk out and turn the key. i love the sound of this thing starting up, i love to start it and drive around inside parking garages bc the sound travels so far and i get constant stares from the sound.

i get 8-10 mpg when im hard on it and barely any better on the rare cases im easy on it and could not care any less. 9k in 4th gear sucks down fuela dn u gotta accept it.

there is NO other car i could justify driving with 10 mpg other than a rotary they r such a blast to abuse. mine sees 9500 rpm every day since it passed the 1k on the odometer and i have neevr looked back......

i thought the handling was perfect but then i got coilovers and it handles so much better than before u gotta pull over and take a break after ripping thru these onramps at speeds we can take. i cant wait to get my falken rt 615s put on in the spring bc itll be ever better and i can barely imagine how itll be possible!!!!!!!

i got my 06 on march 29 and have over 15k already and it feels like i had it a week. there is no other car i want to own and i hope i never see the day i need to get another car bc itll never be the same without my renesis!

I told my wife some time back that when I die, this 1984 Harley FXRT is to go into the hole with me. I bought it new, I've put about 180k miles on it, including some transcontinental trips. I don't see a dozen of them a year, and I just effin' love it.


But then this thing came along in September and whispered in my ear. I only see three or four a month here in central Washington, usually the same ones. Now that hole in the ground will have to be a bit bigger.

A couple things I want to ask...

Who else just LOVES the speedometer? I think it's just perfect. The style, the lighting, how you can easily coincide your RPMs to speed, etc. I could always use a real oil guage and perhaps a more accurate gas reading, but the center circle is just perfect. When I get a new car, which won't be for a long while, I will definitely hope the speedometer is something like the 8's. I also love the blue lighting that's on before you put the keys in or when you take the keys out.

Also, I don't think I'd be able to live without the controls on the steering wheel. Volume, muting and tracking all at my finger tips, so that I can even adjust my music and stuff on turns while keeping my hands on the wheel, or while shifting with my right hand.

 

The styling: That's what caught my attention 3-years ago with the first magazine articles. Finally purchased a new 2006 3-weeks ago.

The steering wheel controls. Have had other cars with these but these are the most intuative to use.

The "rarity" of the car. Don't see too many around. Everyone at work has to ask what it is.

The blue pre-lights. (wish there was a way to have that while driving).

Cool factor: Drive high school age son and neighbor 2-3 days a week. Dropping them at the entry has been a trip. The first day after gettting the car I picked up the carpool kid he walks out with a lacrosse stick! No problem I pop the trunk and drop the pass through. We load up and get to school. Kids scramble out an dproceed to pull the lacross estick out! lol

Ahhhh... I calculated my gas mileage last night.. 18.5mpg baby! I'm delighted because I was expecting the horriffic 14mpg since I do mostly city driving. At the gas station some kiddies on their skateboards shouted "RX8s are weak!" in their little tough-guy voices. Then proceeded to get into a Kia. Woo!

 

A few weeks ago, I went to a Porsche dealer with my old Man to look at the mid-life crisis cars for him. I looked at the instrument cluster and I think the RX-8's instrument display is influenced by the Porshe's. Even the font is similar (with me being a graphic design guy and all)

I also read, but can't remember where, the dimensions of the RX-8 are very similar to the dimensions of a Porsche (which one?). Though this might be attributed to the RX-7.

Anyways, I've heard Mazda sometimes described as the poor man's BMW. But perhaps the RX-8 is best described as the poor man's Porsche Cayman.

Stare at mine each time I go out for a smoke. Couple times a day. It's been 9 months, still don't get tired of staring.

I just wish I could stop thinking 'I could change this, add this, sure would look nice dropped a bit, etc.'

 

I think mostly everything has already been mentioned. Personally, I find myself driving around a little longer instead of just trying to get home ASAP. I love the handling and the accurate feedback you get from the steering system. You gotta also love the unique sound the engine makes as it move up the powerband!!

really? the speedometer? don't get me wrong, i don't want to be a downer on this thread but i want an analog speedometer. so if that is one of my biggest complaints, i think the car is doing quite well. i do, however love that blue and wish i could adjust it so that it was on while driving.

and for the positive - just about everything else about the car. i just drove a mustang owner who likes to go on and on about his HP and torque. well, i made a believer out of him today as he heard the redline beep, smoothness of the car, the wonderful cornering onto the onramp, and blast it was to drive. how can anyone who drives this car not love it?

i love the central tach most of all. the digital speedo grew on me as the days went on and now i dont ever wanna go back to an analog speedo. i love the small shifter and short throws, the aluminum pedals, the little bend in the corner of the gas pedal perfect for heel-toe-downshifts.....no car will ever be PERFECT from the factory but for the money this thing is great!!!!!!!!

 

Have had the Blue -8 since May and I'm still afraid of scratches! - My appreciation for it just continues to grow - Mom pleads for me to take it rather that any of our other vehicles. She likes the comfort, the heated seats, ease in exit and entering (she is 94 years old) and she loves the attention the car generates. I love the way it drives, it's quiet power, and for the first time a car that commands respect from valets, other car owners, and the Car Wash Gangsta's... I have never owned or rented anything like it. Mom and Dad used to drive Buicks, Cads, Big Olds, and even a little red mustang, but Mom says this beats any car they ever owned....And even little kids walk around admiring it - it is art!

 

In 1988, I bought a brand new RX7 turbo, $20,000. I loved it, all but the seats.

I bought this RX8 for the same money, and it has 4 seats.

Could anyone ask for more? bang for the buck??????????????????

 

15 months of bliss with my 8.

 

I can't believe I'm saying this - but - the digital speedometer is growing on me. It is unthinkable. I hated it for the first 10k miles.

But, we definitely need a real oil pressure gauge.

I loved the digital speedometer right from the start. Most gages I prefer a needle, just look for the right position, more or less. But with a speedometer I really want to know the number. Together with the one-click-per-mph cruise control, it's one of those little things that gets better every time I look at it.

Another great feature of the speedometer is that the passenger can't see it.
