getting better gas mileage?
since I got my 8 about 5 months ago, I've been getting better gas mileage,
at first, I got 200miles to the tank, now, it averages about 250.
I don't think i've been driving it any different....

Mine is already getting noticably better after just 5 weeks of ownership. Started using the 87 octane (no noticable difference in performance), and got over 20 mpg on a trip to San Diego and back last weekend. On the current tank, looks like I'll get 250+ with a mix of city and freeway (220 so far with 1/4 tank left). The gas milage seems to be very re-sensitive, which of course makes technical sense but seems particularly so for a rotary compared to a piston engine. I try not to rev it past about 5,000 rpm if I'm just toodling around town or going to and from work. I know the extra boost is there if I need it or want to show off.

what's the fun in that?????
Hmm ... let me check my driveway ... Yup, my -8 is there and it distictly resembles a PERFORMANCE/SPORTS CAR ... which means ...
Why be worried about gas mileage?
This like having Carl Lewis on your track team, but you don't want to have him run too fast so you make him wear flip flops ...

Got my 8 with 4300 miles on it (demo) approx. 1500 miles ago and received the "M" flash the day I bought it. Was getting 16 mpg (25% around-town/75% freeway) to 19 mpg (100% freeway) but was noticing alot of unburnt shmuutz around the ends of my exhaust pipes. The stuff actually looked like a small amount of liquid molasses flowing out the ends...
Got the hotter plugs installed yesterday under warranty/TSB (Valley Mazda, San Luis Obispo has an A+ so far...great service!!). 21 mpg and no shmuutz!! :D WooHooo! Throttle response is much improved. For anyone who has gotten the "M" flash but is still running the colder plugs...get em changed out!!
Regards, Art

Most recent tank I got an impressive 13.8 mpg. Low fuel light came on at 180 miles.
As soon as I hit 50k in my 8, she's gone (warranty is over).
While some owners obviously have money falling out of their ***, I do not. Consequently, when I looked at new cars, fuel economy WAS a consideration. Mazda lists the RX-8 (auto) to be 18 city and 25 highway. This WAS part of my decision. If I would have known I would be getting 13-14 mpg, I probably would have looked at something else. Whether it was Mazda or the Feds setting the mileage, I believe I was mislead. Period.

Because I had already been driving around on the "M" flash for a couple of weeks with no real improvement, it was an easy deduction (on their part) that the the plugs must be to blame...It always works better if you get the other person to think it was their idea...they will defend it to the bitter end!! :D
