Gas mileage....so much worse than I thought!

OK so I calculated how much I put into my car between 2 fill ups and then tracked the mileage. I drove very conservatively. By driving like an old person and only revving high when I took my sister-in-law out around the block for her birthday, I think I noticed a difference in mileage.
I filled up 13.56 gallons at 718 mi. I did my normal routine for two and a half days and filled up 13.1 gallons at 971 miles.
So I drove 253 mi between the two fill ups.
What is the correct way to calculate that?

19.31 mpg, for all around mixed driving, that's good.
I reset my trip each time I fill up; yours is 253 miles before fill up. Tank filled at 13.1 gal gets you 19.31 mpg (miles/gallon = 253/13.1). Try to record a run when mostly on highway, you should get around 21-22 mpg.

Hi everyone
I've had my RX8 for about 6 days now and I love it....however....I've already filled it up twice, and it's due for another fill up today.
I'm getting maaaybe 14-15mpg. I've been at cruise control on the hwy, set at 68. I've done very little driving around town. I have a killer commute (70 mi each way), so I expect to spend a lot of money on gas. Yea, this wasn't the most practical car
My point isn't that I'm spending a stupid amount on gas—that was a given. My issues is simply the mileage itself. I figured I'd be averaging 20.
Is there anything in particular that could be influencing gas mileage that much? What should I do?
My future husband has a Prius, but this isn't balancing out as much as I was hoping it would

well the best i ever got on my rx is 28.04mpg all highway, so i did 467km ( 290miles) just as my gas light turned on, and then i filled it back up and put it 47 liters (10.3gl) just today i have 219 miles on the car and my light just turned on and thats a mix of highway and city, but mostly city with a bit of high reving, but i did take it 196km/h for a good 10 seconds

47 liters is 12.4 gallons liquid which is what you should be converting, not gallons dry which is the 10.3 you converted (should be 10.6). You got 23.4 mpgs off that, not 28. 28 sounded a bit
.My last full highway trip got me the same.
omg, are you kidding me?? so you posted that you're getting 14-15 mpg's, perpetuating the rumor (for the most part), and it turns out you don't even know how to calculate mpg's???
like others said, 19 mpg mixed driving is good. now sell your car and get something else.

I have 40k on my 04 auto. I drove two tanks with the cruse set at 65mph and got 27.5mpg. Then the hardest thing was the one tank(really 250 miles) I did with the trucks in the slow lane. Most trucks passed me as I was doing 55mph. I got 29.5mpg, It takes ALOT of patients! If I am having more fun its 16 city and 21 hwy(probably the real norm). Its my 7th rotary Mazda and much more fun when I keep the revs up.

I hit about 27-28 mpg going 60 MPH in 60th gear. Was pretty nice. As was stated though, took way too much patience.
I did get to let her loose in Omaha, though. Sitting in 3rd gear doing whatever I could to accelerate out of a tight situation.

On my newest RX8 I ran the first tank with no pre-mix and got 18mpg.
I then added my premix (I use little 2.6oz Lucas Synthetic 2-Stroke bottles) and got 19.5mpg on the next tank with driving the same route.
I just wanted to see if it made a difference and it seemed to. While there are MANY factors that can give a 1-2mpg variance, especially on a rotary, I like to think the premix helped.

I managed my personal best so far at about 21.5 mpg. This is mixed driving with one 80 mi trip on the highway (40 of those miles included hauling a set of 17 inch rims and tires for my wifes car). Also, my wife was in the car for most of the 220 miles I had traveled lol... go figure.

I figured that having a blast pushing my car like I did on my protege mp3 would affect the mileage. I didn't realize it would affect it that dramatically. I just need to change my driving habits in my daily life to compensate. I'll save the fun for weekends.
Or, I could always just sell it and buy back my MP3 as per your suggestion. Maybe a minivan or something. Either way thanks for your constructive support :D
