Gas cap and CEL question
Okay, So my CEL light just came on for no reason the other day. Car is running perfectly fine. I couldnt figure it out but when I went to gas up, I noticed my gas cap was not even screwed on. Then I tried to put it back on but its stripped. So I will have to go buy a new gas cap. Question is, once I get a new gas cap, will the CEL go away on its own? Or does a tech have to turn it off?

I had my cap replaced under warranty. It is running better than it was - it had a slight knock, I replaced the plugs, knock still there. After they replaced the cap , no more knock. I put a new battery in it while I was at it.

just remove the battery cable for a few minutes that will reset it.....or go to autozone and have them erase it....CEL usually bugs me so i try to get it off there asap....

I vote for going to Autozone and having them read the code. Always good to know what it was, even though gas cap off is really good evidence it was one of the gas cap codes.
I'm curious - how did your cap manage to get stripped? The cap may be plastic, but those threads are pretty big.
