CA GAS Cans in trunk

i am planning on purchasing one, but not so sure about the safety of having one in the trunk and how long i can keep it there

of course i will secure it somehow, but is it really that safe?

i sometimes do long drives and sometimes there aren't gas stations for miles [regretting not taking that last exit to fill up]

well i only plan to use it when going on long trips, like a week vacation to another state or a weekend

from my research from google it states its safer to have a gas can that is full than lets say, half way because the fumes are more flamable than the actual gasoline, and make sure it wont move at all [of course it will be strapped in some how] but im still cautious about it

the fact that gas goes bad within 30 days is not a factor because of course i would just put it in my tank if it ever comes close to that

I would NOT do it myself because I've seen what gas fumes can do.

Having said that, IF I just had to do it then I would not skimp on the gas can.
I would get a metal commercial grade can which can cost around $100 or so but they are designed with safety in mind.

Do not get a cheap azz plastic gas can!!!
Please.

Yeah I agree with the idea of getting a quality commercial can.

I've carried a plastic one with no problems. The key is definitely to have it full, and close the lids tightly. If you're worried, seal up the spouts (with tape or something); but it shouldn't be a big deal.

So what do you do after you've used the gas, and there's nothing but fumes in the can?

IMHO, using a quality metal can with screw-on lids for the spout and the vent does not pose a safety hazard. But I've got to wonder where in the US carrying much extra gas is easier than just paying attention to where you are and filling up before a long dry stretch.

Rachel Nevada. When I hit that road the sign said a long long way to the next gas and it was about 110 deg so AC was a must. I was at 3/4 tank and could see a Shell station from the sign. I filled up and headed out. When I got to the next gas station I saw I was under 1/4 tank and it was a mom and pop gas station. That day I would have liked to have had a can of 92oct in the trunk.

Other than that I've not been to another place I felt the need to carry extra.

^yeah i don't feel i would ever need one I start looking for one about 1/4 tank left and try to pick and exit that has multiple gas stations(because single stations seem to jack up the prices) and get it ther!
