Garage damaged 8 that is going back to Mazda!!! 3M material Pics.
10AM: recieved call from Mazda saying buyback paperwork was in. (reason: 11MPG in city- 15/16 hwy)
1pm: Make deal with my orig dealer for $1k over invoice for identical car in stock at another dealer. (used offer from a 3rd dealer to match deal.)
8PM out to dinner with girlfriend and discover damage. I am a monthly parker in this garage and all the employess have been careful not to park near me... until today. Of course no one contacted me or admitted damage... and often some of them drive recklessly- screeching tires, etc. They all love the 8 but one of them F**d 'it up by sideswiping it.
3M Material- is on the bumper, but not the rear fender. I haven't yet taken off the 3M from the bumper- (probably I won't) but I can see that there would have been more paint damage if the 3M wasn't there. In this case it probably doesnt mater since they sideswiped it hard enought to make deep dents- but in another case it could have been the difference between damage and no damage.

pic attached- 3M looked alot better before scraped- it looks like crap here. I think most of the black scrapes on bumper would come off with the 3M (some is down to primer or metal)

emailiists,
I am so sorry to hear this happened to you. Also quite shocked at the milage you are getting in NYC.
I still await the delivery of my 8 and as I often visit NYC on client calls am clearly concerned about the low MPG you're getting.
I wish someone would get a handle on the wide range of reported city MPG people are getting.
3M is on my list and will call the place U used and mention that Richard sent me.
BTW: You still happy with the 3 M job?
Curious to know, why you buying another 8 if you're returning this one due too low MPG?
Claude H.

The answer a few questions- This is the car I am turning in.
Claude- I think statistically my MPG is in the lowest percent of all 8's, so the chances of me getting a better one are good. I will try and work out a deal with my dealer (since the car has to be driven from another dealer that I can test the MPG on the rider over- and that if I don;'t like the new 8, I can pass on that one ans wait for another to come in. I have to call them today about that.
I still like the 3M material alot. I attached a picture- put it seems no images are loading at this site at all. You can see the 3M did help, but It isnot meant for this type of "accident"
I also just got a call from my garage manager, saying he doesn't possible see how this could have happened- since no ther cars reported damage, and they don't park suvs next to my car. The dent is so high it had to be an SUV. Luckily my girlffriend works for the hospital that own our housing and garage, so they will get involved if the garage or thier insurance co doesnt want to pay. They are in the procerss of reiumbursing me for damage to my Probe that the garage's insurance co denied my claim for.
Good thing orthapedic nurses are hard to come by- they want to keep her happy. - but it does **** me off to get a phone call saying "I don;t see how this could have happened......"

emailists,
I have lived in NYC, Upper East side, for over 40 years. Parked my cars in building garages for 25+ and as you probably already know, the garage manager, nor their insurance or in house claims people are going to admiit to anything, EVER. Their job is to wear you down by deniying, ignoring your calls or whatever. They hope you will give up in frustration.
It happended to me on more than one occasion over the years and I can proudly claim that I won everytime. It took time but it seems when I threatened to be "Their worst nightmare" and also made it quite clear that I would sit in their main office reception area until my issue was properly attended to, things sudently came together, each time.
Remember you are dealing with an underling who's job it is to wear you down. Things seemed to change for me when they got a sense that I might go over their head and suddenly give their boss an unwanted head ache and THAT I WAS NOT GOING TO GO AWAY.
It sucks and what happened to you can be nothing more than an unwanted pain in the *ss.
On another note, you seem to be of the opinion that another RX8 might yeild better milage, Interesting? What do you base this on?
You never know, we might cross paths one day, 2 Titaniums go proudly through the canyons of Manhattan.
Time I revisited Ruppert Towers anyway.
Good luck,
Claude H.

And to claude4, emailists is right. Spend lots of time reading up on the low mpg problem and you will see there is some kind of bell curve dictating what mileage these cars get. At 11 mpg that is def at the low end; high end is around 24 mpg. There is no discernable patter nor rhyme/reason as to why one car is low and another is high. It is not attibutable to driving style, climate, type of gas, build date or anything else we can detect. So yes, I agree trading in you will get a higher-yield car.

8_wannabee,
I am an rx-8forum.com addict while I await my 8 and read all I can.
I am quite astonished at the wide range of MPG people are reporting in their experiences.
Certainly driving style has a lot to do with it, as well as climate, humidity and temperature. BUT a range from 11 to 24 MPG. How can that be so?
Is it normal for one car model to have such a range in gas consumption?
Can it be the luck of the draw on which car you get?
Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread but emailists is a fellow New Yorker and I hope to gain from his experiences.

You're not keeping up very well with those new accessories, are you. Anything that is sensed as approaching the RX-8 - and is determined to be in imminant danger of colision with the RX-8 - is immediately repelled with an induced garvitational force equivilent to 1 ton. Way cool, but adds 73 pounds to your GVW.

I blew out a tire on Jupiter the other day because of all that excess GVW. Had to hire a crane to have it very slowly extracted.

This sounds just like that divit someone tried to sell me the other day.
Don't know what a divit is?
A divit is 10 lbs of sh*t in a 5 lbs wrapper.
And it only smells a little.

They say, if you had a telescope so powerful that you could see beyond the end of the universre, & you look down just a teensy little bit, you'd be able to see the rings around Uranus.
:D
Seriously though. Uh... Oh yeah... I wish I had a dime for every "divit" that I had to design!
That's all.
