Well, I have an 04 G35 6MT coupe and I'm thinking about switching to RX8, as I'm having a baby on the way, and I think I can sell the 4 door thing to my wife

I test drove a RX8 the other day, and I have to admit that I love the clutch on it. This is one thing that I don't care for in my G35, the stiff clutch with the long throw distance. So much easier to change gears in RX8. The handling was also great.

But, I didn't care much for the power (or the lack of.) Yes, it is a pretty quick car, but I guess I missed the low end torque.

So here is my question. What are some options to getting the power up there.

The way I see it, I can use bunch of non forced induction bolt ons and get a few HP's.

Or get super charger or turbo.

For the money, which of above three options would be best? What would be the corresponding HP gain, as well as 0-60 (or 1/4mile) times achievable?

if you're looking for any noticable HP gains you will have to go FI - end of story.

You have a baby on the way, which equals NO $ for FI. Nitrous is a relatively cheap/effective way to get an extra 45-50 whp (with the smallest jets) when you want it. You may be able to squeeze out 10-12 ponies with bolt ons and reflash. Also may be able to shave off a couple tenths of second with lightweight wheels, flywheel, suspension and some mild weight removal from the car.
Either way, making the 8 respectable (i said respectable) in straight line speed is not a cheap endeavor, but it is possible.
If you plan to drag race, i wouldnt choose the 8 unless you had some big $ to spend.
Now, if i am off in assuming you dont have 6-7k to put towards FI, then i would also say Supercharge it.

what's the speed gain / hp gain with these? i'm curious about 0-60 and 1/4 miles times (is the stock 6.8 sec 0-60?)

If you're bankin' it, go FI for more power.

Used Greddy Turbo Kit would be the best for your money.

I would recommend reading through the Greddy Turbo threads first before making any moves (which is what I'm doing as well, actually).

Goodluck if you do purchase the 8.

ps, get extended warranty if it's a younger model.

pettit s/c depends on which stage you get (stage II gets ~287whp)

stock 0-60 is 5.9, but you've gotta be the ******* stig to get that.

I got a baby on the way too. All the nice strollers don't fit in the trunk of this car!! I don't want to settle for a dinky stroller. Looks like I'm going to be using the other car a lot more for next 2 years.

Plain and simple. The 8 is not made for straight line racing. It is made for cornering and going fast through them. You can get a few bolt-ons and be satisfied. If not go with a s/c. Also the 8 is on par with the G. I've taken a few at the Infiniti dealership I used to work at. Don't get confused by the lack of low end torque. If you know how to drive the car then you will be fine. It's different in driver expierence needed than the G. Or just get the new G35 sedan S. It's guick and comes in 6mt.

Do not switch, I owned a G35 Coupe 6MT and traded it for a 2007 Mazda RX8 6MT. I miss my old infiniti more and more everyday. Don't do it, just sell the Infiti to your wife plus its bigger in the inside. I know I have a son and his car seat takes up a lot of space in the 8. Not as much in the G.

Why not just get a 4dr G35 sport? 300hp or some sort. Or get an FX35. The 8 is a sports car with somewhat useable rear seats. It is not as practical as a sedan. And trunk is small for strollers. We use Baby Bjorn Active....

I don't see any benifit in buying a Rx-8 if you have a G35. You already have a similiar car except that its a 2 door and you don't have to buy alot of bolt on for low end torque and pickup. If you had a RX-8 I wouldn't see why you would want to buy a G35 its so close.

Yes the RX-8 clucht is slicker, the power streeing smoother and its made pretty well amenities wise , but the G35 has a list of things its does well like reliability, luxury brand name and resale value.

Each to their own you can't wrong with either, but a G35 is a higher priced vehicle. Kinda like trading a Boxster S for a Boxster, same thing both are nearly the same Porsche.

Hey man, I had an 05 G35 Coupe 6MT and switched to an RX-8. It was a great decision but I do miss the torque. There are certain aspects of the G that I miss and there are certain aspects of the 8 that I love.

The G35 was on my shortlist, but the 8 is a way more involving car to drive and it was practical in a way that no 2 door can be. I bus my 5 and 10yr. old around with no problem, and unlike what someone said, it seems far more spacious from a headroom and legroom perspective back there.

Seems like it time for you to just bite the bullet and get yourself a sedan. Yes the RX-8 has 4 doors, but it's not some baby hauler family car. There are plenty of fun sedans out there with the power and torque you want. Maybe give some of them a shot and if you're really not happy with any of them then conside an RX-8.

As others have pointed out, FI is the only way you're going to quench your desire for more power.By going FI you'll be pending a bunch of money and you'll be tossing out any warranty and decreasing your reliability. It just doesn't make sense...

We used to own an Infinity I30 before we traded that in for an MPV and an RX-8. Had to replace wife's MX-6 at the same time. :-) My wife claims it's easier to take kids in and out of the RX-8 than the I30. So, there. I have a 6 and half and 4 and half year olds. The car is fine to take the whole family around.

That's the beauty of this site.

But really, did you really run the 8 through the gears at redline shifts? Likely not in a test drive. I used to own a modded 455, ask me if I miss all the torque.

I would go with something else , i have a 13 month old daughter and taking a car seat in and out of the 8 sucks, so i kept the 8 for myself and also bought a 2007 mitsu endevour trust me its gonna be hard to carry around baby stuff in the 8 so if ya are finacially stable get the g35 seden or something else

I don't think there is any doubt that the 8 is more fun to drive than the G35, but I've got to agree, you should just get a newer G35 sedan, or another fun 4door. It will probably save you a lot of grief from your wife too.

If you upgrade the springs and swaybars on the G, you may just reach a happy medium.

Be good to your baby, buy an SUV with the best safety rating and the softest ride.
