Fun with a 911 on the twisties

Not a street racing story, just some good clean fun.

Was out for a run on one of my favorite winding mountain roads the other day, when I came up behind a 993 type Porsche 911. He sees me behind him and punches it. “OK, time to have some fun and see how the RX-8 really does in the twisties”, I think to myself. The 911 pulls out a slight gap, but before you know it, we’re into a 340 degree hairpin and I catch right up. Out of the turn, I’m on his tail and before he can gain a gap, we’re into another hairpin. On and on we went, he'd pull a gap on some stretches, but I’d be right back with him in the turns. Great fun and he just couldn’t shake me.

This RX-8 can really handle, the look on the 911 drivers face was priceless.

be careful when following close thru the twisties - it's more dangerous than close-following on the straights at 3x the speed.

If you think the RX8 handles well, go drive a Miata with even mild suspension mods :D

hehe

One of my friends owns a Boxster... Absolutely no competition against me Of course, this guy thinks the Boxster is a better value than the S4 or a M3...

What I want to know is how all these writers know the expression on the face of the driver in front. Was the driver in front turning around like the gangsters in the movies so they could fire out the rear window?

That's just driver, the Boxter is a bit of step up in the handling and speed department. I don't get how this is allowed but kills aren't.

Driving like that through the twisties with another car is far more dangerous than any highway run or stoplight race... Not that mind hearing the stories, but it cracks me up that "I got my RX-8 to 140mph" stories, or I paced some guy on a twisty road are ok, but racing some guy on the highway from 50-100mph is forbidden.

I agree with you Ike. While I own an RX-8, I gave another 8 owner a "physics lesson," as I described it going up against a motorcycle (me the rider). The "lesson" did not express wanton disregard for others, but just what I said...a lesson in physics...and that was waaaay too dangerous for this forum. However, going through a twisty road, probably only 2 lanes considering that hairpin turns are involve, and not one peep from the mods. Who's a$$ do I gotta kiss around here?

As I said, it wasn't street race or a kill, but a spirited drive through the twisties. Just happened to have a 911 in front of me with a pissed off look in his face (visible in his side mirror).

Actually, it really was just good clean fun. The 911 driver was mature and not about to do anything stupid, neither was I. We were probably going at 7-8/10ths at best. When we caught up with traffic, that was the end of our fun.

True, it probably is the driver. I understand the handling, but speed? It's a 97 and not an S. But speaking about handling, how does it compare to the 8 (I'm sure it is better...)?

Don't get me wrong, I respect Porsche's handling capabilibies, design, etc, etc, but I don't like the Boxster at all. It is the poor man's Porsche--designed to be affordable and overall cheaper. I've driven it, been in it, and find that the interior is very spartan and filled with lots of cheap plastic parts. Maybe this is just my opinion since I am towards the "don't like" side. I just think the Boxster is a waste of money (unless maybe they do a major overhaul). Although, I'd kill for any other Porsche (maybe not the SUV). :D

If a boxster is for poor men, what does that make RX8 owners? Geesh.

Yes, the Boxster is suppose to be a better balanced car than the 911. Check out the current Mar. '05 issue of Road&Track. They picked the new Boxster S over the new 911 S, of course price is part of the equation as well. See this thread: https://www.rx8club.com/general-automotive-49/r-ts-best-sports-car-shoot-out-mar-05-a-53101/

Porsche has always been one of the cars that Mazda has used as their benchmark. The 2nd gen RX-7 had strong styling cues taken from the Porsche 944. In dev. testing for the 3rd gen RX-7, they always had a 911 along. Even with the RX-8, Mazda likes to point out that the dimensions of the car match those of the 911.

no offence .. to you.. since i dont really car if you race or not..what you just stated is prooly everyones 'excuse'..

I am a mature driver and know my limits bla bla...it was for fun...technically that is considered a race ( since im sure you driving significantly over the posted limit).. just worded as a spirited drive...

once again no offence.. I can guarantee you everyone who owns a sports car.. ahs one of those "spirited drives" most peeps on the hwy.. but the few daring up in the twisites.. BUT . racing in the HWY is bad.. and twisties is good.. i feel this is the general norm within the "OWGHC" owners with good handling cars..

anyways i have spirited drives every day... clean fun.. and im mature toooooo.
:D
