Fuel Mileage
#53
My fuel mileage is self induced, but I have said this before so I guess I will say it again.
I have owned and driven a lot of performance sports cars. The best example I have though was my 427 super charged cobra. It would get about 18-20 highway and about 5-8 on the track. The great thing about our cars is our fuel mileage always sucks but at about the same rate. If you drive it hard, or drive it like a grandma you average close to the same. Other performance sports cars are in no way like that. You can tell how someones been driving solely on fuel mileage.

I can't account for what others are getting our of their cars. I can only account for mine, and it has been averaging 23 mpg over its 25,000 miles. It's just a driver, not a racer.

Considering my fuelly stats are from May to January with a lot of cool days and mix of short and long trips it should be fairly good.

Granted I only use my car for longer trips and commuting to work. I try to never use it for a shop hop or when I may have to go multiple places that mean turning the car on and off a bunch of times.
The people getting really low mileage, you are either stop n go, or you just keep the gas down all the time...You can't complain when you are part of the problem
I wish I knew what my mileage was when I've had it on the track, it would be interesting to know.

Hmm I am gonna edit my first post, and just say fuel logs or it didn't happen:P
Its easy to get 22.2 and say well I'm averaging 23-24. I think the logs are more honest. You can put notes in. You can lie on them sure, but I would guess, and hope, that your more likely to just enter honest numbers.
Also I would like to note, my fuel mileage has gone up 1mpg after the cold front froze us over. I think its because colder denser air has more oxygen in it.

I use the odometer with the Android app "aCar" at the pump or with the receipt. Can't possibly fail I reckon, unless one misreads it like an ***

just so you guys know this car use a lot of fuel just to idle.
so if you have a lot of stop and go traffic, your mpg going to suck. big time.
Like me, I have to stop at least 10 times before I reach the closest highway. and in the city, I have to stop for traffic every 1 minute or so.

My drive to work is all access roads, only two lights (which I rarely catch), I hardly ever sit in traffic unless I happen to hit an accident or something on the way to pick up my kids on Fridays. And again, I do idle my car until warm each morning but........ my mileage is the same as it was when I did not let my car idle in the morning and drove 35 miles, all highway, to my office in San Antonio.
For you guys getting over 22MPG. I personally just don't believe it. I have been to countless meets, cruises, statewide meets, WHIV, etc. Fuel is always a topic for conversation and of the 100 or so RX-8 owners I have met, I don't recall anyone averaging 22-23MPG. And of the 140 or so on fuelly, there are a couple over 22MPG but if you look at their logs you will see why, there are fuel ups where they have averaged 38MPG, which is impossible in the RX8 so obviously they are mistakes.

Thanks for the suggestion. That's something we've been considering for
a while, so it's good to hear there's more demand for it. It's not on
our to do list yet, but we'll keep it in mind.

For example if you have the GT vs the sport you are going to have electric power seats, 6 disc cd changer, sunroof etc etc. That stuff can add up to 200-250lbs of weight that you are carrying around that I am not.
Then if you add custom wheels...... if they are heavier / wider than stock it will reduce your mpg, or even a body kit /sunroof wind deflector will affect aero dynamics and reduce mpg.
Feel free to look at my logs on fuelly they are all a very consistent 20-23mpg. I even checked my speedometer against my gps because of this thread to see if its accurate and its bang on.

Tires make a huge difference too. I tend to notice that the better (stickier in the dry and wet track days) the tire, the worst the gas mileage is. I remember seeing a 2mpg downfall when I switched to better tires than what I had before.
I could see people with All Seasons possibly getting much better mileage since they are more likely to be optimized for this kind of driving.

What you need for good MPG is a summer tire with the least rolling resistance and of course keeping the right pressure. I believe tires get rated for this in many tests nowadays, at least in Europe.

It is very possible. There are even a couple of factors where different cars will get different mpg.
For example if you have the GT vs the sport you are going to have electric power seats, 6 disc cd changer, sunroof etc etc. That stuff can add up to 200-250lbs of weight that you are carrying around that I am not.

Did an experiment this week. I granny shifted between 3000-3500 rpm every time, and every time I was on the highway I set the cruise control to 65mph.
My commute is only 16 miles one way, and around 2.5 miles of it is getting to and from the highway. The end result was..... 19.3mpg. Normally I get around 16mpg. I thought I'd be higher than that but oh well.
It's been a really painful week. My lead foot has been throbbing something awful. Back to gunning it again!

So you got almost 3 more MPG. I know how hard it is to keep your foot out of it. I bet you had it in a few times even at 19.3.......for a few seconds. Those 3 mpg are your cheap entertainment. Enjoy.

Ok, guys after three tanks. 12.4, 13.4 AND 12.4. On the 13.4, I really tried to keep my foot off it, shifting about 4500. It occurs to me that I have lots of cold starts and short trips, I work from home, so I don't have a commute. My usual trip is dropping off a daughter at dance or school, probably less than 5 miles for most trips.
Going to simply top off by an entrance ramp, drive 50 miles at 70 in 6th gear turn around and drive back to the same pump. If I don't see something better than 17, takin er in to see if she is throwing any codes. The mazda shop manual lists about 25 possible reasons for poor fuel economy, a friend read them over the phone. They include everything from a dirty air filter, to maf sensor to compression loss. Have any mechanics out there had any luck in diagnosing a problem and getting a number from 12-13 to 17 or so. I'd be thrilled with 17, you guys talking 20+ bring tears to my eyes, I feel like a Russian in a grocery store!!!!

No I actually didn't hammer it one single time that whole tank of gas, and yes it is painful. I wasn't trying to save money or anything. It was just a test to satisfy my curiosity.
