Fram oil filters
I was hoping someone could clear this up for me because I am currently a little confused. I went to pick up an oil filter for the woman's 04 xterra. I went to walmart and looked on chart, and it gave me #6607. Took it home, looked under the xterra, and the nissan one on her xterra is bigger then the one I bought. I check it out on internet, and here it lists #7317 and 6607 as filters for the 04 xterra. I then realize that the 6607 is same number as my rx8. so I open box on the fram super guard, and match it with an advance auto 6607 rx8 filter I have, and they are different sizes. They look like they fit, but the 6607 advance auto filter is longer then the fram super guard one. The nissan filter on the xterra looks like the advance auto 6607. Is your head spining yet? Are these basically same filters, just different compatible versions? I don't understand why the xterra lists both numbers as choices, and they are different sizes, unless it's an optionwhich one you want to use. The rx8 only lists the 6607 but the fram one is different then the advance auto one, yet they are same number. and in the list of choices for filters. Anyway, I guess I'll save this for rx8, but I am gonna assume it's smaller then the mazda filter currently on there. If anyone can make sense of this, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!!

Personally, I'm not crazy about Fram filters. I don't think that they are made as well as many other brands. Mobil1, Purolater, Napa, Hastings, etc. are better quality filters. For the 8 though, I'm sticking with the Mazda OEM filters.

The specifications of oil filters deal primarialy with the following key points:
1) The size and type of threading
2) The flow and exchange rates
As long as the aftermarket filter is within the ranges set by the manufacturer for #2 and will fit on the engine, then the filter can be "recommended" for the particular auto.
Fram could make a filter that is 3 feet long, and aside from not being able to fit it under the hood, the could recommend it for the RX-8 as long as it met the specs of Mazda. There are no physical dimension specs.
Fram has about 3 different "lines" of filters: good, better, and best. None of them are physically identical on the outside, but all three are in the book for a particular model of car. It's because of the fact that auto makers really only care about these two points.
Good luck,

I knew someone would comment on this rather then actually answer something pertained to the post. Commenting on the quality of a filter is purely subjective, and is pure opinion. Whatever is better to you is all that matters, but to me they are all the same if you change your oil often. Fram filters are very affordable which makes people think they need to spend $12 and buy a Mobil one filter. Those are a total waste of money. Anyway, thanks to you all who actully pertained to question. I appreciate your input. I just never saw a variation in sizes for the same fit filter for a car before, so it threw me off. The oil filter size is very common. it fits all new Nissan cars including 350z.

yep.. it makes no diffrance ther both going to work just as well.. esp if you cahnge your oil ever 3000 miles. so dont blow a bunch of money on a filter that says its better!! there all just about the same. NOw if you were driving a big heave truck that gets its oil changed every 10,000 miles.. then you want to spend money on a really good filter.
But i know you will change her every 3000 or less so.. buy what is easyest to get in your home town for the mid range dollars..

Well subjective or not there has been alot of testing out there that proves Fram is the most cheaply manufactured filter on the market. The adhesives (for sealing the filter media to the base plate) and filter media has been known to come apart prematurely. There are a few car mfgrs that WILL void your warranty if Fram filters are used, Toyota to name one. With the stock Mazda filter being at $7 and change it makes sense to use one of these to be safe!
Check out this thread that has previously beat this subject to death!

I've been using fram oil filters on my 95 vw golf. 220k miles, and it runs like new. When I hit 500k, I'll let you know.
What would the result be if I used a Mobil one filter this entire time. NOTHING NADAQ ZILCH. It would make no difference what filter I got, my car would be same as it is now which is strong and lots of engine life left to it. If you are a lazy *** who changed his oil every 10k miles, or just drops the oil and refills without changing filter, then you may want to get a more expensive one that can catch more dirt. The rest of the mumbo jumbo is commercialized, and apparently a mass majority of people fall for it. Fram is a leading filter company which sells the most oil filters. Naturally when that happens, people want to jump on and find whatever they can to make it like it's cheap. NO matter what filter you get for your car, it's not gonna affect how long your engine goes for. How often you change your oil and how you drive the car determines that.
