Forgot how good the brakes are.

Drove my wife's Outback the other day when I had to lay on the brakes pretty hard. Man, you forget how good the RX's brakes are until you drive another car. While driving the 8 I feel I can out brake any car on the road which is pretty close to true. And they don't even squeal......yet.

But the big problem with using hard every so often is thaat you forget how slow the brakes are in other cars and can get into an accident.

Any 3000 lbs car is going to out brake an Outback.

I don't know, take a ride in a Tiburon which doesn't even have vented discs in the rear. Very quick brake fade in that car, even at moderate speeds.

I know, there is no comparison, that's the point.

Yeah, but the fact that it beats an Outback shouldn't make you "forget how good the brakes are". The brakes could be awful and still beat an Outback. There is no comparison, so doing so doesn't support the idea that the RX-8 brakes are good -- just that it's a different car.

Thank you. If you were to use the brakes on a semi-truck, they probably brake a lot more than an 8...... but the semi weights a lot more....

I remember when I drove a rental Neon... I was going up some steep mountain road and almost started rolling backwards. I almost made my passenger get out and walk alongside to lighten the load.

Just drove the girlfriends new/used Volkwagen Cabrio home from Carmax ...........er, while I have many, many general problems with her car (which I will not voice under penalty of death)............

..........I did have a huge and voiced opinion about how spongy the brakes felt. Then I remembered my 8, and kinda, sorta just extolled the virtues of the Cabrio..............))

I rented a neon to go to vegas so as not to put miles on my car, what a POS... I did a fast U turn and the understeer was unbelievably horrible. It's no surprise you can get a new one for 10 grand, the only things that are worse are made in korea

Yea put some good agressive Street / Autocross pads on a RX-8 and you will have to put your eye ***** back in your head once you pick'em up off the dash.
Don't know if Porterfield R4S pads are available but if so that's what it will get.
sales Person told me that the RX-8 has brakes modeled after the Boxster S. Uh yea Not quite. 4 piston calipers Hmm don't see then here. Not to say that the brakes are not everybit as good. I am quite impressed with the brakes however.

For those who didn't follow Aseras' link to the New York Times' article, at 110 feet, the RX8 holds its own in 60-0 braking performance with the some of the more exotic cars in the world. I feel like I'm driving an old VW Transporter when I hop into my wife's Honda Pilot.

Aston Martin V-8 Vantage: 107 ft.
Ferrari F430 Spider: 107 ft.
Lotus Exige: 107 ft.
Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren: 107 ft.
Porsche 911 Carrera S: 108 ft.
Ferrari Enzo: 109 ft.
Chevrolet Corvette Z06: 109 ft.
Maserati Quattroporte: 109 ft.
Mazda RX-8: 110 ft.

Q: How many, who are commenting on how 'terrible' the Outback's brakes are, have actually DRIVEN an outback?

1988 Ford Scorpio 117 ft. The brakes felt great too, very solid.

Very sorry to let it go, I replaced it with the RX8.

Beautiful car, well designed and laid out. I wouldn't even drive the Mustang when I saw the power mirror switch from the Scorpio reused in the most ghastly way.
