Floods, floods and more floods

I'm finding it amazing that there are so many flooding issues after a couple of years. For the record, I have never flooded my 8, and I have the original battery and starter on my 2004. It seems simple enough to follow a very basic protocol.

But I think that I have the answer. Keep in mind that I am not an engineer, or even that much of a mechanic. But it still seems simple enough to me. Try this on for size.

When you turn the key to the off position, the ECU shuts off the flow of fuel, yet keeps the plugs firing until the the fuel in the chambers is burned off. It shouldn't take more than a couple of turns of the rotors before all the fuel is burned off.

Am I over-simplifying things?

I understand that there are new owners and that they may not have been told of this when buying the car. That is something that all car salespeople should be trained to discuss with potential buyers. My salesman told me that I should let it warm up for 5 minutes before driving.

The main thrust of my thread was more about the potential solution that I proposed. Will it work or not?

Did he say 5 minutes before driving, or wait 5 minutes before shutting the engine down (cold)??

Agree with you LiveBlue, I have been thinking about that too, probably because I am not an car engineer either :-)

As I understand, flooding comes from the rich mixture that is requested as long as the engine isnt warmed up. The procedure of shutting off should probably stop the flow of gasoline first (but that maybe can damage 'to the seals if it spins without?), or switch back to a lean mixture just for sake of switching it off. But Mazda has probably thought about that, maybe someone with a technical background can shine a light on this.

Most of us know already how to prevent flooding (haven't flooded either), that's maybe not the discussion we seek in this thread.

My salesman told me only 2-3 minutes warm up. However, temperatures in my area are almost always very warm so its usually not a problem.

i think there are plenty of threads on this. instead of starting a new one this could have simply been added to an existing one. thread closed
