First time at the drags

So i just whent out to the drags.

We only have 4 drag days this year at Spokane raceway park Due to Park owners changing. The place was packed. After 7$ and 3 hours in line to go down the track once this is what i got.

Rt - .5111
60 - 2.4858
1/8 et - 9.2119
1/8 mph - ?
1/4 et - 15.4291
1/4 mph - 88.88

I dumped clutch at around 6k rmp. Lots of wheel hop, switched at about 9300 rpm (right before the limiter) and the bad part is ... Missed 3rd. Im pretty sure thats why my 1/4 mile mph is so bad. Do you guys think if i didnt miss 3rd id get about 92 mph and maybe do a 14.9? There was one other rx8 at the track. it was also his first time. He ran a 15.40 at 92.somthing mph. with a .98 reaction time and a 2.8 60 foot . clutch dump at 4500 rpm .

Track temp was 53F
I have a 05 6speed with 24k, just changed to redline tranny and rear diff fluid 3 days before drags. 23 psi rear tires.

My buddy that i ran with did a 16.7 at 84.74 in his 01 corolla 1.8l 5 speed.
6.489 rt, 2.76 60 ft, 10.92 1/8th et.

His best time was 16.5 flat racing a 03 lancer 2.0 liter 5 speed that got 16.7 after talking sh*t to my bud for a half hour about him driving a corolla.

no way you would have gotten 14 anything with that 60 foot time. your trap speed is low because you missed a shift, your ET is high because your 60' is kinda bad.

you need a 2.1 or 2.0 60' to run 14s.

feather the clutch out from 4.5k.

So 4500 rpm and feather out the clutch. Is 23 psi good on the rear tires? Also what rpms are best to switch at. Ive had people tell me to do it right at redline, others that say right before rev limiter ( thats what ive been doing) and just a couple min. ago i was reading a post with a 1.8 jetta guy saying he shifts into second at 7200 rpm, to third at 7000rpm, and fourth at 6800 rpm. Dropping 200 rpm's with every shift. I know that the higher rpm's your at when you shift will start you off with more hp in the next gear.

what do you guys recommend? Right before leaving the track i saw the guy with the blue rx8 and agreed to run him next saturday.

If my friend managed to lower his 60ft to 2.0 or 2.1 (if possible) what do you think hed be able to run in the 1/4 mile . I know hes done 16.5 already but not sure what the 60ft was on that.

Thanks guys.

From my knowledge and person experience *ha, like that means much* I'd say since the way the Rotary works, shift right before fuel cut, as the engine makes it's max power right around there *If I'm not mistaken at 9k is when it's peak is*.

Rather than drag racing a road course car, why don't you instead try driving it as it was designed - turning, braking, accelerating, passing, REALLY DRIVING.

Then you will realize exactly the point of why this car exists.

I personally don't have any issue with drag racing but I do think drag racing a road car is idiocy, just the same way I'd think that taking a blown-hemi '68 'Cuda to Road America instead of Great Lakes Dragaway would be stupid as well.

Drag racing in an RX-8 is about as satisfying and successful as trying to hammer a nail with the butt end of a screwdriver. Oh sure, you can do it, but at the end, you have a poorly hammered nail, and a damaged screwdriver, and a far less than satisfying experience.

I had a friend that used to use his 1/2" ratchet as a hammer. I laughed my *** off when it's guts spilled out all over the garage floor one day

Anyway, I pretty much agree with what you're saying. I can see how drag racing damn near any car would be fun for at least a few runs... the thing I don't get is the people that are obsessed with it that own a car like the 8. If 1/4 mile times are all you care about, why buy this car? I'm not saying anybody in this thread falls into that category, I'm just rambling.

I really believe if you bought this car with the intention of drag racing it.... you bought it for the wrong reason.

if i had a choice...

but road racing is hundreds of dollars and there are no tracks open for a "run what you brung" on friday nights.

however, there is a drag track 30 minutes from my house and its $20 to run all night.

its better than nothing.

i didnt buy this car for drag racing, i bought it because i liked it. and i take it out to country twisties pretty often with my friends, and thats really fun also, but its a lot more risky doing that. but it is also fun to take it to the strip every once in a while.

My first time drag racing, I was running 15.5-15.9. Dont feel bad, itll take a while to get experienced, unless your god I mean Kersh *jk*. Just enjoy the car and experience, I know what you mean, I went to the drags all the time just for fun and entertainment, I knew my car wasnt all that fast but it was also cool to know I was the only RX everytime so people were always interested in what I would run lol. (Then I would dissappoint them all with a 15).

i always fall back on an analogy i used to bury a buddy of mine who thinks street racing is all that and a bag of chips:

"Having a car that all it has going for it is a fast 1/4 mile time, is like having a **** star **** yet you've got AIDS. In the end, it's not worth all the hype."

now i realize the OP isn't street racing here and kudos to you bud for keeping it on the track but be it either on the track or "on da streetz", quarter mile running just isn't that big a deal... I always end up hearing "Dom" in the back of my mind saying nonsense about "living a 1/4 mile at a time"... /yawn

Yeah i'm a member of SCCA and we only pay $25 an event. And there are usually 2 events each month. AutoX definitally will make you a better driver, and it feels good to beat 300whp + Evo's. You won't have a chance doing that at the drag strip.
