A few questions...

I am so excited! I just bought a rx8 and couldn't be happier! Anyway, I currently own 3 rx7s and I have a few questions about the 8. I tried searching for these but I was either blind or couldn't find em:
1) what is the general opinion on optimal oil and oil filter choice for our 8s?
2) for my 7s, I use a healthy dose of MMO (Marval's Mystery Oil) in my gas and oil--are there any addatives recommended for the renesis?
3) someone told me that I need to rev the engine up to 4000 rpm for a minute before shutting it off--is this true (I didn't find that in any documentation)?

Thanks,
FS

There is no agreed oil…some people use different type, brands, etc?

2) for my 7s, I use a healthy dose of MMO (Marval's Mystery Oil) in my gas and oil--are there any addatives recommended for the renesis?

Oil in your gas??? I guess it just has that name…?? Your additive question I would like to know too…

3) someone told me that I need to rev the engine up to 4000 rpm for a minute before shutting it off--is this true (I didn't find that in any documentation)?

What year is your car? Is it new/used, etc? I just got my 8 and I never do that. I think that step (according to one owner who did not like his cold weather starts, performance, etc) is only needed with cold weather or if you “have to” (can stress that enough) turn off the engine cold. Once it’s been warmed you don’t need it.

Congrats and good luck with your questions!

Castrol 5w-20
92 octane
Hold at 3000 rpm for 20 seconds-- retun to idle-- shut down, will help keep you from flood probs.
Congrats on your new purchase

My $.02:

1. I don't think there's a consensus... most people have been scared off of using synthetic by Mazda's original warning, but apparently the Renesis can handle it fine. I change my oil so often (2500mi) that dino oil is fine with me (Castrol GTX 5W20 is what many of us use). The factory filter is pretty good, but I use a slightly larger Mobil1 filter that some RX7 guys told me about (model M1-110).

2. I don't hear of any popular fuel additives, although there are a couple guys on this board using pre-mix oil in their fuel for added protection.

3. That's one method to help prevent flooding if you're shutting the renesis off cold or not fully warmed up yet- doesn't need to be a whole minute- just 10 seconds or so and kill the ignition while revving to expel any excess fuel as the rotors spin down. The better method is to just always warm the motor up (don't do short moves like driveway->garage, etc).

Ok, thanks guys. It's a 2004, brand new. I personally use castrol gtx in my 7s too. Is it pertinant that I add 92 octane? I haven't done enough research on the renesis yet but I know that rotaries run at less compression, a lot less than boingers, so i guess the renesis has compression around the same as a high grade boinger? MMO is an oil--originally used in WWII in superchargers in fighter planes. it burns clean and has many cleaning addatives in it to help your engine, BUT won't harm our sensitive rotaries like other addatives will. i personally saw slightly better fuel mileage and a slightly smoother engine after several treatments in my 7s. i drop some in the tank and oil (when i change it).

oh, any suggestions about oil filter brands? i use pure one (the blue one) filters...

I used a Fram filter and Castrol in my first change , no problems. Where I live , the highest octane we have is 90 , I use Shell V-Power since day one in it . When I went to Dallas , they had 93 V-Power , car ran great there . Its hard to compare , because here is 3500 ft above sea-level . Drag cars usually ran a second quicker in Dallas then here . But some people use regular 87 octane with no problems
