I only know one way to work and I think the only alternate route is 10 miles out of the way...and you know what they say about the RX8's mpg...

Then don't rev too high if you want to max gas on a temp detour.

Yeah, this is my first manual. But I've driven them a few times. Take lessons if possible, they do help and better to make mistakes on someone else clutch / tranny. Take as many lessons as you can. The less you have driven manual the more lessons you ought to take.
Make sure to do anything in your lessons you expect to have to do once you get your 8.
These are some toughies and thus worth someone else's clutch on.
- Parallel parking
- Parallel parking facing down hill
- Parallel parking facing up hill (Not that tough, but puling forward at the end can be.)
- Starting from a stop while facing up hill.
- Going up hill slowly
- Stop and go (traffic)[*]
- Highway merges
- Down shifting
- Down shifting to pass on the highway[*]
- Down shifting from a high gear (5 or 6) into a low gear (2 or 3)[*]
- rev matching[*]
[*] = Things I still suck at.
rev = revolutions per minute the engine makes. Press the gas the revs go up.
Some quick advice.
(There are TONES of threads about people wanting to learn manual so I will keep it short)
Listen to the engine. - While standing still look at the tachometer (The thingie that tells you the engine's rpms) and press the gas till you get near red line. The sound of the engine will tell you roughly when you need to shift so you dont have to always be looking at the tachometer.
Clutch - In a level parking lot, shift into first, let off breaks, and slowly let off clutch. This will give you an idea of where the clutch engages.
When the weather changes to something you haven't driven manual in before, go to an empty parking lot and play around to get a feel for your car.
Finally, if you can't find a school out there that teaches manual (which would be very surprising) You might want to post in the NE board asking if anyone knows any. I don't know how far you are from Long Island, but I can give you the name of one place here that does.
Good luck, enjoy, and sorry for the super long post.
If it was a Civic I'm sure there would be a body kit to fix that.
